Overview:
Serve as a recognized professional authority in at least one engineering discipline or specialty area. Conceive and develop solutions to complex analytical, design, and test problems that programs experience. Contribute to systems philosophy and design objectives. Assure continuity of design features from advanced design through contract status. Develop aspects of new theory and design criteria for general application.
Responsibilities:
The Program-assigned Systems Engineering (SE) Leader is responsible for leading a program element, space segment, or space vehicle SE Team to direct and control a totally integrated engineering development of the program mission, space and/or ground segment/element. This position applies to a number of open positions within the Orbital National Security Space Business Division.
As a senior-level engineer, the position is expected to be self-directed using previous experience to lead mission and/or space vehicle design and analysis efforts, and recognize and mitigate program-wide critical technical issues while operating within budget and schedule constraints.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, develop, and critique mission architecture, space vehicle design and analysis, and end-to-end verification & validation activities
- Conceive and develop solutions to complex analytical, design, and test issues that the program may experience
- Develop and ensure proper execution of the Program Systems Engineering Management Plan
- Space/Ground segment chief technical interface at all scheduled program meetings and reviews
- Technical management of the space vehicle elements including subcontracted items/deliverables/work packages
- Planning and conduct of all contractual systems engineering programmatic and technical reviews
- Responsible for consistency of all related safety and mission/product assurance plans
- Responsible to write monthly status and technical performance reviews and reports
- Perform technical DECA (Designated Export Compliance Administrator) duties (if required)
- EVMS baseline generation, tracking/maintenance and variance analysis
- Mentor, guide, and advise junior staff
- Other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
The SE Lead will oversee and manage the integrated systems engineering team - as applicable, over the course of the program.
WRITTEN AND VERBAL CONTACT
The candidate will work with cross-discipline team members and must have excellent communication skills, presentation experience and the ability to work with a diverse community of engineers and managers to achieve the goals of the systems team.
Experience with system engineering requirement tools (Cradle, CORE or DOORS) and processes
- Experience in requirements development and management processes
- Experience in development and maintenance of interface control documents and related processes
- Experience in space system testing and evaluation (flight and ground testing)
- Experience with various technical analysis tools such as MATLAB and STK
- Experience in any of the following areas is also desired: orbital mechanics, spacecraft attitude control, power systems and modeling, avionics or digital electronics design, risk analysis, optics, communications, rocket propulsion, thermal, or mechanical engineering, or spacecraft integration and testing
- Experience and/or training in Earned Value Management Systems
- TS/SSBI Clearance highly desired
Qualifications:
-Must have a Bachelors degree or higher in Aerospace Engineering or related field.
-Extensive technical experience in systems engineering and integration of space systems. Minimum 15 years experience in aerospace systems design, development, manufacture, test or operations, including 5 years of technical or project leadership positions. BS or higher degree in aerospace engineering or related discipline.
Candidate Must Possess the Following Skills and/or Attributes:
- Ability to lead a system engineering team to develop system requirements
- Ability to evaluate and adjust system requirements in order to best meet program objectives
- Ability to develop and manage system interfaces to integrate multi-element systems
- Ability to translate program objectives and customer requirements into system requirements
- Ability to allocate requirements among multiple elements of an integrated space system
