Contract / Temp to Perm / Permanent: Contract

Seeking an Engineer with hands-on experience working with molten salt systems. The project will involve planning and overseeing pilot- and/or industrial-scale proof of principle tests and demonstrations of gas-liquid interaction between liquid and vapor phase metal chloride salts, with the goal of the project being purification of the vapor from entrained solid particulates. Applicant will be required work with WZ plant personnel to design these tests and to carry them out at the WZ facility in Ogden, Utah, with support from Westinghouse Science and Technology Center. Pending successful demonstration of the process, applicant would lead the design effort to develop equipment and procedures for full-scale implementation of the process. These efforts will involve working closely with WZ plant engineers to interface with existing plant equipment, utilities, and procedures.

Applicant should be familiar with molten salt thermodynamics and solid-liquid-gas phase equilibria, to optimize processing conditions for the proposed process. Ideally, applicant should have experience handling, blending, purifying, drying, melting, sampling, vaporizing, and condensing at least pilot scale (preferably industrial scale) quantities of moisture sensitive inorganic halides (preferably chlorides) from room temperature up to “intermediate” molten salt temperatures (200-400°C). Familiarity with materials of construction is also important (corrosion resistance, seals, pumping, etc.), as well as with high temperature equipment design such as heat tracing, jacketing, and temperature and pressure instrumentation.
