Conduct of Work Mentor for a DOE Site in Hanford, WA:
Estimated Hours Per Week: 40
Work Location: Hanford 200 area (east and west)
Job Duties:
• Mentor/coach CHPRC personnel during operations, D&D, maintenance activities, and work management activities across the CHPRC, with a focus on improving practices and behavior, based on: U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Order 5480.19, Conduct of Operations Requirements for DOE Facilities, and PRC-PRO-OP-696, Conduct of Operations;PRC-MP-MS-003, Integrated Safety Management System/Environmental Management System Description (ISMS/EMSD); Voluntary Protection Program; and Human Performance Improvement (HPI).
• Focus on observation of Conduct of Operations practices.
• Under the cognizance of the assigned Vice President or Director, mentor key managers/supervisors, monitor activities and provide on the spot coaching and real time feedback to personnel being mentored as needed.
• Report to the lead mentor and attend staff meetings to share items, ideas, and insights as necessary.
• Review emergent issues as identified by the Project VP or Lead Mentor.
• Ensure effective and consistent application of HPI principles and fundamentals.
• Provide recommendations for Conduct of Operations and Work Management program continuous improvement to the Conduct of Operations Technical Authority.
• Conduct crosscutting reviews of programs spanning the activities conducted within their assigned project.
• Observe work practices and habits within each project, looking for common practices and areas for improvement.
• Mentors will seek out areas for improvement by observing work planning, pre-shift briefs, event critiques, and other activities governed by specified procedures and processes.
• Observe walkdowns conducted to either assist in defining job scope or identify hazards, or as a component of implementing the SAFER process.
• Observe work planning activities, including hazard identification and analysis, work control document development, and plan-of-the-day.
• Observe work release activities and pre-job briefings.
• Observe implementation of the work, including communications, use of the work control document, identification of changes with associated responses, managing document changes, stop work, Lock Out/Tag Out, and interface with contractor/subcontractor elements.
• Observe post-job briefings and identification of lessons learned, providing feedback to the work planner and project management.
• Observe training activities, including those required for position-specific qualification or training matrix; continuing training; briefing/training for project-specific or company-wide actions.
• Conduct instruction briefings that provide focus on: control of work activities, questioning attitude, self-checking, error prevention, HPI techniques (e.g., SAFER and STAR), and stop work.
• Mentors will coach workers on improved techniques, Field Work Supervisors (FWS) and first line management personnel in their supervision and management techniques. Address individual skills during conduct of any activity they observe.
• Coach project and functional management on effective communication of expectations, goals, objectives, and core values; effective listening techniques; and constructive feedback.
Required Qualifications:
BA/BS degree in a technical field (or equivalent combination of education and experience), plus 10 or more years in facility operations, D&D, construction and/or waste management.

Other Desirable Qualifications:
Recent experience on DOE sites (preferably Hanford) interfacing with contractor management and the DOE customer.
