[Electrical Engineer] Senior Electrical Engineer (Part Time Remote w/ Travel Required)

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking Engineering, Professional, Technical, and Administrative support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Science laboratory operated by Stanford University.

Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance SLAC's core mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent, which is essential to national security. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from SLAC staff employed directly by the security complex. Pay, benefits, Human Resources, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

We are seeking an experienced, senior Electrical Engineer to provide subject matter expert support on the Critical Utilities Infrastructure Revitalization (CUIR) project. CUIR is a line-item project directly funded by Department of Energy. The purpose of CUIR is to modernize SLACs utility infrastructure to provide reliable and sustainable utility systems for delivering world-class science and enhancing the impact of DOEs scientific programs.

The offered position is for a term of two-years, renewable on an annual basis thereafter for the duration of the CUIR project. The level of support will range from 20 to 30 hours per week for the duration of the contract. The assigned work can be performed remotely but the senior electrical engineer must be able to travel to SLAC for site visits with durations ranging from 1 to 4 days, when at least 2 weeks notice is provided. The amount of travel and on-site work will be limited to 10% (up to 20 days per year). Domestic travel and lodging will be paid by CUIR and capped at the federal per-dim rate for San Mateo County.

Responsibilities will include:
- Interface with SLAC scientific user community to develop electrical requirements
- Provide electrical engineering leadership on the development of specifications, drawings, and designs by SLAC
- Review technical deliverables such as reports, calculations, drawings, and documentation prepared by manufacturers and subcontractors
- Attend project design meetings and technical change control meetings, and participate in critical design reviews
- Act as the electrical engineering representative of CUIR, making presentations at management meetings involving SLAC, DOE and other stakeholders upon request
- Participate in inspections of electrical equipment at the time of delivery to ensure quality of the delivered product
- Lead design reviews, address technical challenges and promote safety by design on CUIRs electrical scope
- Collaborate with external design consultants and internal stakeholders to develop innovative and cost-effective design solutions aligned with project requirements
- Assist CUIR with evaluating and reviewing submittals from external consultants and contractors

The senior electrical engineer shall demonstrate expertise in utility-scale AC Power Systems projects including design, procurement, installation and commissioning of High Voltage substation and Medium Voltage/Low Voltage distribution equipment utilizing modern technologies for SCADA control, protective relaying, power quality, harmonics filtering, reactive power control and voltage stabilization. Along with technical background in power systems analysis including load flow, short circuit, motor starting, and arc flash calculations e.g. using ETAP, and transient analysis e.g. using EMTP or PSCAD.

The following qualifications are required:
- A minimum of 15 years of relevant experience and a MS degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of California or ability to transfer a License from another state within 6 months.

Experience should include:
- Leading electrical design of utility-scale AC power infrastructure
- Developing construction drawings, technical specifications, and cost estimates
- Deep knowledge of state and national construction codes (e.g., NFPA 70 & NFPA 70E)
- Design management approach utilizing design-build project delivery methods
- Providing electrical technical support on a federal project or at a DOE laboratory or at an equivalent high technology facility

Other desirable skills include:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
- Competency in using Bluebeam Revu for collaborative design reviews, plus proficiency in MS Office and Sharepoint.
