Space Systems Engineer (17283-en_US)

This position will have the opportunity to work on advanced power systems for microreactor applications with responsibilities to research and develop new designs for Westinghouse's microreactor technology across commercial, defense, industrial, and space applications. If this sounds like an environment you would thrive in, we have an exciting opportunity for a Space Systems Engineer located in Etna, PA, US. Hybrid work arrangement of 2/3 days in the office is available. Your Day-to-Day:

  • Perform power conversion, power management, and energy engineering design and analysis related to conversion of nuclear fission power to thermal or electrical power for terrestrial or space applications.
  • Coordinate between multiple sub-systems, sometimes with competing interests, to optimize the overall space vehicle, mission, and/or reactor system.
  • Develop and mature space system products including technical budgets (mass, power, link, etc.), Concept of Operations (ConOps), and verification and validation (V&V) activities.
  • Author technical requirements for space vehicles, sub-systems, and/or components.
  • Perform trade studies to optimize technical and programmatic variables of complex problems.
  • Develop and execute upon test plans to validate models and parameters.
  • Identify, define, and direct the approach for successful resolution of risks, issues, and opportunities.
  • Bring engineering rigor to resolution of problems that are sometimes loosely- or only partially-defined, requiring knowledge and experience within given discipline.
  • Interface closely with customers (NASA, DoD, etc.) partners, and suppliers.
Who You Are:
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems, Aerospace, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering or a related field.
  • 0-6 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficient in CAD (AutoDesk Inventor & SpaceClaim preferred).
  • Experience working in a laboratory performing testing and experiments.
  • Familiarity with analytical calculations across one or more of the following areas: Systems (FATE, Dymola, etc.), Mechanical (Ansys, Thermal Desktop, etc.), Nuclear (MOOSE-tools, MCNP, etc.), or Electrical (HFSS)
  • Strong collaboration & organizational skills to work effectively on a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an US Government security clearance.
Desired Skills:
  • Master's degree in Systems, Aerospace, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience developing mechanical or electrical components and/or systems for spacecraft or launch vehicles.
  • Experience with requirements tools (DOORS, JIRA, etc.) and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools (Cameo, ModelCenter).
  • Proven track record of performance on team design/build competitions (AIAA, FSAE, etc.)
  • Experience with pressurized fluid or gas systems.
  • Knowledge of polymer matrix composite (PMC) and/or ceramic matrix composites (CMC).
  • Knowledge of standards and specifications within the aerospace industry.
