HIRING ADVANCED SHIPFITTERS
$45/HOUR ST $67.50 HOUR OT

LOCATION: Newport News, VA
DURATION: 2 YEARS
STANDARD BGC & HFT REQUIRED (not disqualified for felonies)
Must be US Citizen 

4 years experience as a first-class shipfitter

Must have commercial or naval shipyard background
Not entry level

What they need to know how to do:

-Multi-pass tack welding

-Use oxygen/propane torches for:

-Burning (cutting)

-Heating

-Read ship drawings and blueprints, including:

-Weld symbols

-Material types

-Reference lines and datum lines

-Measure using fractions (tape/ruler)

-Lay out, fit, and assemble steel parts

-Build ship structure correctly and to spec

-Work in hard conditions (shipyard, heavy steel, awkward positions)

-ollow OSHA shipyard safety rules

-Use grinders and needle guns

-Do air carbon arc gouging

-Use work packages and drawings to plan your job

-Work off ship reference lines and molded lines

-Erect and fit complex ship structure, including:

-Shell plates (curved hull steel)

-Decks

-Bulkheads

-Longitudinals

-Trunks

-Install and replace hull inserts, penetrations, and foundations

Nice-to-have (but not required):

-Rigging / material handling

-Using levels or transits

-Shipwright / erect & set experience

-Tank testing

-Running lifts (JLG, scissor lifts, etc.)

Tests you MUST pass at Weld School:

-Stick welding (SMAW)

-Vertical (3F) and overhead (4F) positions

-Specific rod type (they supply it)

Test breakdown:

-1 hour practice

-1 hour vertical tack test

-1 hour overhead tack test

-Visual weld inspection class (6 hours)
