POSITION DETAILS
Position: First Class Welder – SMAW (Stick Welding)
Location: Newport News, VA – Shipyard
Pay: $38/hour
Per Diem: $120/day for qualified non-local candidates
Contract Duration: 2 Years
Shift: Flexibility required
IMPORTANT: SHIPYARD WELDING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED!
Candidates must have at least 4 years of NNS or naval shipyard experience as a First Class Welder.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
Minimum 4 years of First Class welding experience at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) or another naval shipyard.
Strong experience with SMAW (Stick Welding).
Ability to perform multi-pass fillet and butt welds in all required positions.
Experience using oxygen/propane heating torches.
Proficiency with Air Carbon Arc Gouging.
Ability to properly use fillet and butt weld gauges.
Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations in shipbuilding.
Comfortable working aboard ships, on ladders, staging, and in physically demanding environments.
NO MIG, TIG, PULSE ARC, OR ELECTRICAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED!
This position focuses on Stick Welding (SMAW). Primary welding tasks include standoff studs and hangers.
WELDING TEST REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must successfully complete the following tests at the Newport News Welding School:
1. SMAW MULTI-PASS BUTT WELD TESTS
2G – Horizontal
3G – Vertical
4G – Overhead
All-position qualification in accordance with MIL-STD-248D
2. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION TESTS
Air Carbon Arc Gouging Proficiency Test
Visual Inspection of Welds – Level I
Welder Vision Test
IMPORTANT: All welding qualification tests must be passed WITHOUT TRAINING before beginning productive work.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform SMAW welding on shipboard structures and assemblies.
Weld standoff studs, hangers, and other assigned components.
Produce quality multi-pass fillet and butt welds.
Use oxygen/propane heating equipment and Air Carbon Arc Gouging tools.
Inspect welds using appropriate gauges.
Follow shipyard welding specifications, safety procedures, and quality standards.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
U.S. Citizenship REQUIRED.
Must pass a Background Check (BGC).
Must pass a Hair Follicle Drug Test (HFT).
Must meet required safety training, medical clearance, and PPE qualifications.
Must be flexible with shift assignments.
