Title: Substation Design Engineer

Position Type: Direct Hire

Location: Fort Mill, SC

Reports to: Engineering Supervisor

Status: Exempt

Job Summary:†

The Substation Design Engineer will provide substation physical engineering, technical support for transmission substation engineering and design team with a company that is experiencing extreme growth in Fort Mill, SC. Involved with direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations. The Substation Design Engineer will lead discipline work of projects, perform responsible charge engineering duties, manage project schedules and budgets as well as supporting proposal development, project cost estimating as well as supporting business development efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Understanding of basic needs of protection and control and civil/structural discipline as they apply to utility substation and transmission lines
Ability to lead a team of engineers and designers
Oversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters
Experience checking designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clients
Manage budgets and project schedules.

Job Requirements:

Create substation physical design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects
Ability to read, interpret, and engineer physical designs for utility stations through 500kV, including substation arrangements, sections, and elevations, foundation and grading plans, lighting plans and details, fence plans and details, grounding plans and details, rigid bus designs, strain bus designs, below grade designs to include duct banks and cable trenches, bus and equipment support structures, as well as a fundamental understating of circuit arrangements into and out of a substation
Thoroughly understand the installation requirements of high voltage transformers, group operated disconnect switches, breakers, PTs, CCVTs, line turners, surge arresters, and other equipment within the substation†
Ability to complete studies and create grounding designs is strongly desired
Perform bus calculations, lightning protection calculations, and use software for ground grid designs
Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings
Visit sites, advise on physical engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting at workstation for extended periods of time viewing monitors
Working on keyboard and using computer mouse
When visiting client sites must follow site safety rules and work in all weather conditions.

Education / Experience:

5 to 7 yearsí experience as a practicing engineer
Experience in power utility industry is desired
Bachelorís degree from accredited Engineering Program OR graduation from a Masterís or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs.
Licensed Professional Engineer or the ability to be licenses within one year
Advanced understanding of substation design to include equipment arrangements, lightning protection, grounding, lighting, equipment specifics, and substation construction as it applies to utility substation and transmission line equipment facilities
Experience checking designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
Work independently and Team-Oriented
Able to manage multiple tasks and provide leadership to other team members.
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.†
Good written and oral communication skills.
