POSITION SUMMARY
Performs difficult skilled work in the operation of heavy motorized and special equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision is exercised over subordinate equipment operators and inmate work crews.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or
equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
� Operates specialized heavy construction equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads, bridges, utilities, storm drainage, landfills and related facilities and systems; performing semiskilled and general labor tasks as related
� Operates a dump truck and other equipment in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel and supplies
� Operates a light truck in carrying tools, equipment and supplies to and from repair jobs
� Operates rubber tire loader, motor grader, front-end loader, back hoe, track loader, bulldozer, scraper, steel wheel cement mixer and cutter, and rubber tire rollers and boom tractors
� Operates a tractor, mowers and bush hogs in grass cutting operations; operates sling blade, bush ax and chainsaw to trim limbs
� Operates roller to pack asphalt; repairs pot holes; uses hand tools to fill pot holes with asphalt
� Operates front-loader truck, roll-off packer truck; transports containers to and from landfills; picks up and delivers recyclable waste
� Operates compacting equipment; compacts and covers garbage; pushes and hauls dirt over garbage
� Occasionally services and performs minor repairs on equipment; performs preventive maintenance checks on equipment
� Assists in bridge construction, maintenance and repair
� When not operating heavy equipment, operates lighter equipment or trains other operators
� Supervises subordinate workers and equipment operators
� Removes animal carcasses from roadways
� Uses various hand tools such as shovels, pavement tools, hammers, mechanics and carpenter
tools in the performance of assigned tasks
� Performs general construction, maintenance and repair work on public works and public utility projects
� Maintains required records and files
� Assists in snow and ice removal
� Provides assistance as required for emergency jobs, after hours and inclement weather conditions
� Performs related tasks as required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy construction equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill and care in the operation of several types of motorized
equipment; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to assign and supervise the work of others; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; dependability.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.
LICENSE / CERTIFICATION and OTHER REQUIREMENTS
� All regular full-time and part-time employees of Spartanburg County are required by state law to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System.
� Required valid driver�s license issued in South Carolina.
� Class A or B CDL required.
