Project Management Quality Services (PMQS) is actively hiring experienced Advanced Shipfitters (X11) for a long-term opportunity at the Newport News shipyard in Virginia!

POSITION DETAILS

Position: Advanced Shipfitter
Location: Newport News, VA – Shipyard
Pay Rate: $45/hour
Per Diem: $120/day for qualified non-local candidates
Contract Duration: 2 Years
Shift: Flexibility required

Candidates MUST have at least 4 years of building and construction experience, preferably in shipbuilding or steel fabrication.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Tack Welding – Single-Pass Tack Welding required; Multi-Pass Tack Welding preferred.

Oxygen/Propane Burning & Heating Torches – Experience cutting and heating structural steel.

Blueprint Reading – Ability to interpret complex structural assembly drawings, sketches, weld symbols, and reference lines.

Layout & Fabrication – Experience laying out, fitting, and assembling structural steel components.

Air Carbon Arc Gouging – Experience using gouging equipment.

Grinding & Surface Preparation – Experience using grinders and needle guns.

Structural Assembly – Ability to erect, set, and make up shell plates, decks, bulkheads, longitudinals, and trunks.

Hull Repairs & Installation – Experience installing and replacing hull inserts, penetrations, and structural foundations.

Ability to use work packages, drawings, molded lines, and ship reference lines.

Experience working in physically demanding shipyard or steel fabrication environments.

TACK WELDING TEST REQUIREMENTS

All Advanced Shipfitters must complete tack welding qualification testing at the Newport News Welding School.

1. MULTI-PASS TACK WELDING TEST

Welding Process: SMAW (Stick Welding)

Required Positions:

3F – Vertical Up

4F – Overhead

Testing Includes:

1 hour of practice.

1 hour Vertical Up test.

1 hour Overhead test.

Visual Inspection of Welds – Level I.

2. SINGLE-PASS TACK WELDING TEST

Candidates who do not pass the Multi-Pass Tack Welding Test will have an opportunity to take the Single-Pass Tack Welding Test.

Welding Process: SMAW (Stick Welding)

Required Positions:

3F – Vertical Up

4F – Overhead

IMPORTANT TESTING INFORMATION

Candidates who pass Multi-Pass qualify to continue as Advanced Shipfitters.

Candidates who fail Multi-Pass but pass Single-Pass may remain Advanced Shipfitters.

Candidates who fail both tests may be offered a Basic Shipfitter position at a lower pay rate.

IMPORTANT: Candidates must pass the required welding qualifications WITHOUT TRAINING at the Newport News Welding School before beginning productive work.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

U.S. Citizenship REQUIRED.

Must pass a Background Check (BGC).

Must pass a Hair Follicle Drug Test
