Title: Seasonal Fishway Operator

Position Type: Contract

Location: Manchester, NH

Reports to: Site Supervisor

Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary:  

The Seasonal Fishway Operator will perform duties to facilitate safe and effective upstream passage of diadromous fish for the 2024 fish passage season (April – July). This is a great opportunity for students to receive “hands on” experience with the complex interconnection of hydroelectric energy generation, upstream and downstream fish passage, regulatory requirements, and public education. The Seasonal Fishway Operator will work on counting and transporting juvenile American eels and spawning river herring. This position works closely with generation staff, the general public, and resource agencies (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department) on fish passage requirements. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

•    Assist with fish trapping and trucking operations (transfer captured fish, typically river herring) from holding tanks to agency vehicles.
•    Assist with installation and operation of upstream eel ladders.
•    Assist with installation and operation of video equipment related to fish passage counts within the fish ladder.
•    Enumerate fish counts by reviewing video footage.
•    Maintain a daily log of fish ladder operational parameters.
•    Maintain cleanliness of Amoskeag Fishways Visitors Center.
•    Operate equipment necessary to lift, capture and transport fish (under direct supervision).

Job Requirements:

•    Proficient in Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
•    Must love the outdoors and working with the public to teach the importance of clean rivers and the function of watersheds.

Physical Requirements:

•    Working in varied outdoor environments such as all-weather conditions, all noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on the full range of outdoor work surfaces. 
•    The frequent use of protective equipment may be required. Work with hazardous materials may also be required. 
•    Duties require walking, standing for extended periods of time, crawling, stooping, sitting, climbing vertical and inclined ladders and stairs, lifting, and carrying up to 100 lbs. Exposure to extreme heat and cold. 
•    Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus. 

Education / Experience:

•    Must be working towards a Graduate or Undergraduate Science major (Sophomore to Senior years).
