Job Description
The Shop Foreman oversees daily operations in a metal fabrication shop, with a focus on CNC machining and welding. This role leads a team of machinists, fabricators, and welders to ensure that all jobs are completed on time, meet quality standards, and follow safety regulations. The Shop Foreman combines hands-on technical expertise in fabrication and machining with strong leadership to maintain an efficient, safe, and high-performing production environment.
Responsibilities
* Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of machinists, fabricators, and welders in a metal fabrication shop.
* Plan and prioritize workloads to meet production schedules and customer deadlines.
* Monitor production progress and adjust staffing levels, priorities, or workflows to maintain efficiency and on-time delivery.
* Ensure efficient utilization of equipment, materials, and labor across all shop operations.
* Provide technical guidance on CNC operations, including mills, lathes, programming, and setups.
* Oversee welding processes such as MIG, TIG, and Stick, ensuring proper techniques and procedures are followed.
* Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders to guide production activities.
* Troubleshoot machining, fabrication, and welding issues in real time to minimize downtime and rework.
* Enforce quality standards and verify that finished products meet all specifications and customer requirements.
* Conduct in-process and final inspections to identify defects and ensure consistent product quality.
* Implement corrective actions for defects or rework and follow up to prevent recurrence.
* Train, mentor, and evaluate shop personnel to build skills and support professional growth.
* Enforce company policies, procedures, and performance expectations within the shop.
* Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement among the production team.
* Assist with hiring and onboarding new employees to ensure they are properly trained and integrated into the team.
* Maintain a safe work environment in accordance with OSHA standards and company safety policies.
* Conduct regular safety meetings and enforce the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
* Identify, report, and correct potential safety hazards in a timely manner.
* Coordinate preventative maintenance and repair of CNC machines and other shop equipment.
* Ensure tools and machinery operate efficiently and safely to support consistent production output.
Essential Skills
* Strong knowledge of CNC machines, including setups and programming (G-code preferred).
* Proficiency in welding processes, including MIG, TIG, and Stick.
* Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and technical documents.
* Familiarity with fabrication tools such as press brakes, shears, saws, and related equipment.
* Proven ability to lead, supervise, and motivate a production team in a shop environment.
* Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in a fast-paced production setting.
* Excellent communication and organizational abilities to coordinate people, equipment, and schedules.
* Hands-on experience in metal fabrication, machining, and welding operations.
* Experience with production supervision and shop-floor coordination.

* Experience working in a job shop or high-mix, low-volume production environment.
* Experience in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement initiatives.
* OSHA safety training or relevant safety certifications.
* Experience leading and training industrial or manufacturing teams.
* Skills in inspection and quality control within a machining or fabrication environment.
* General management skills related to planning, organizing, and overseeing shop operations.
* Experience with packaging or final preparation of fabricated and machined products.

Work Environment
This role is based in a metal fabrication shop that features CNC machining, welding, and general fabrication equipment. The environment can be cold in the winter and hot in the summer, with bay doors and fans providing airflow and ventilation. You will work around active machinery, welding operations, and fabrication tools such as press brakes, shears, and saws, and you will use appropriate personal protective equipment as required. The setting is hands-on, industrial, and production-focused, with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and efficient use of equipment and materials.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fredericksburg, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $31.00/hr.
