Talascend is currently seeking an HVAC Technician for a contract to hire opportunity with our client in Andover, Massachusetts.
Work Shift: 3rd Shift: Tuesday-Saturday, 11pm-7:30am
Overview
This position involves maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC and refrigeration equipment across multiple buildings in a campus setting. The role requires hands-on technical work in a life sciences environment, with familiarity in building automation systems, computerized maintenance management systems, and blueprint reading.
Responsibilities
Monitor operation of refrigeration, HVAC, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, VAV systems, and related equipment
Respond immediately to system alarms, troubleshoot issues and take appropriate corrective action
Log complaints, status updates, and follow-up actions in CMMS database
Analyze system operations to determine causes of problems, make adjustments, and implement solutions
Perform preventive maintenance on building and critical system equipment
Install and repair piping, valves, filters, hot water systems, and HVAC units including package units, mini-splits, actuators, and VAVs
Service water heaters, motors, heating units, pumps, and air compressors
Rebuild heat exchangers and replace bearings and seals in equipment
Check CMMS for new service requests and respond promptly
Record system readings and document all maintenance activities in CMMS database
Report equipment conditions to management
Assist other technicians with major repairs and maintenance tasks
Ensure safe handling of refrigeration and other compressed gases
Maintain accurate records of materials, labor, and costs in work order system
Keep work areas clean and return tools to proper storage locations
Repair and correct alarm conditions, monitor system operation, and make adjustments to ensure proper functioning
Inform upper management about equipment conditions and perform preventive maintenance
Install and repair HVAC units, pumps, motors, heat exchangers, piping, valves, and controls
Comply with safety policies and ensure accurate R&M data collection
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License (active)
Minimum 3 years’ experience working with HVAC and mechanical systems
Strong troubleshooting skills for HVAC and refrigeration equipment
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Knowledge of OSHA standards and local codes
Proficiency with computer-based systems including Microsoft Office and Outlook
Skill in operating electric hand tools and required technical equipment
Valid driver’s license
Physical ability to work in confined spaces, on rooftops, and lift up to 50 lbs
Willingness to participate in on-call rotation
Preferred Qualifications
Massachusetts Refrigeration Contractor License
EPA certification for handling refrigerants
Experience with centrifugal chillers and cooling tower systems
Knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS)
Experience with Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems
Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints and schematics
Experience with commercial boiler systems
Background in commercial or industrial building maintenance
Knowledge of energy conservation practices for HVAC systems
Experience with emergency power and backup systems
