DAY IN THE LIFE:
The Production Tech (PT) will primarily be operating a coating machine for the majority of their day. The Coating machine is a large 6ftx6ft machine that operates automatically for the most part. The PT will sit at a station and monitor a computer to make sure the machine is operating properly based on the run sheet. The run sheet tells the PT what the machine should be doing at different phases of manufacturing. The PT has to remain alert during the runs, which can take up to 6 hours to complete!
When the PT is operating the coating machine, they will work in a clean room environment manufacturing & QC-ing wafers for electronic and other technological use. Wafers are round objects that look like CD's or records. The wafers are coated with whatever the customer needs and then chopped up to be inserted into cameras or cell phones, etc. All employees wear full bunny outfits in this area. In the clean room, they will QC the wafers utilizing machines that scan them and then share their results on a computer. The PT will document their work, and operate computers and machinery that assist in the production of the thin and fragile wafers.
Once every 1.5 weeks, they will assist in cleaning the Coating Machines. The coating machines have to be disassembled (using hand tools). They will have to crawl into the machine, disassemble it, and clean the machine parts. This requires them to wear a respirator and and tyvex suit. The maximum they'll lift is 20 lbs. They use scrapers and grinders to clean the machines. This is the most physical aspect of the job, but it only happens once every week and a half.
Lastly, they will operate a Bead Blaster to blast substrate off of the Coating machine parts. The Bead Blaster is a box that has 2 holes in it with gloves. The PT puts the part they need to clean into the box, and they use a device that blasts the part with micro-beads to remove the substrate. The box and gloves prevent them from coming into contact with the beads and dust particles.
