As a direct report to the President, the Laboratory Manager leads all operations of a unique analytical laboratory supporting the Department of Energy’s (DOE) environmental cleanup mission at the Hanford Nuclear site. This unique laboratory, with an $80M annual operating budget and 280 staff, includes hot cells for processing highly radioactive samples and assessing physical properties as well as laboratory facilities for conducting radioisotope and chemical analysis. The laboratory also conducts Research and Technology Development related to novel analytical methods to address unique site analytical needs, emergent technologies, physical and chemical characteristics of high level nuclear wastes, field instrumentation, and mechanisms of equipment failure.
The ideal Laboratory Manager candidate will have experience managing all aspects of facility and analytical operations and personnel including 1) Operations of DOE nuclear facilities with staff in excess of 250 employees; 2) Analytical laboratories for both radioactive and chemical analysis with sample throughput of 40,000 samples annually; 3) Laboratory facility modifications and upgrades; 4) Mentoring and motivating professional staff as well as a union represented workforce; 5) Nuclear facility operations oversight and integration experience including maintenance, improvements, operations control and conduct of operations; 6) Research and technology development projects; 7) Integration of safety, health and QA programs and objectives into all laboratory operations and research functions; 8) Business services associated with the $80m annual operating budget; and 9) Interfacing with DOE client as well as other Hanford site contractors.
