Using visual and physical examinations, performs inspections and surveillances of mechanical installations, in-process inspections, and receipt inspections to detect any defects, and to assure conformance with drawings, specifications, standards, and codes. Perform and witness acceptance testing and inspections of systems, structures, and components equipment at remote supplier facilities and at PPPL on-site locations.

Individual will follow all applicable PPPL safety regulations and PPPL procedures.


A QC Mechanical Inspector II shall have the commensurate capabilities and be willing and able to perform the following duties at PPPL and our suppliers/vendors:

Perform inspections of installations of structures, systems, and components from beginning through completion. Assure compliance with codes (e.g., ASME, AWS, IEEE, NFPA), specifications, drawings, procedures, and the PPPL ES&H program. This includes:

Perform weld inspections per code requirements.

Perform inspections, surveillances and walkthrough oversight of work activities, and safety conditions.

Use measuring equipment to perform detailed inspections of machined parts or assembled components.

Inspect HVAC equipment, concrete forming and reinforcements, fire barrier penetrations and seals, etc.

Perform receiving inspections of parts supplied by subcontractors/vendors using associated documentation, standards, and instructions.

Generates and issues various reports, such as inspection reports, nonconformance reports, and activity reports.

Identifies general problem areas that may span many work activities and could potentially impact Lab quality or ES&H, provides management with potential solutions to correct the problems.

Education and Experience
•High school graduate or equivalent is required. Associates or B.S. degree in engineering or technical field highly desirable.
•Ten (10) years of related experience in equivalent inspection activities associated with power plants, heavy industrial facilities, or similar facilities. At least two (2) years of this experience should be associated with accelerator facilities, nuclear facilities, or the aerospace, defense, or military industries.
•AWS Certified Welding Inspector.
•Experience reading technical specifications, procedures, and drawings is required.
•Computer literacy and use experience is required.
•Ability to write clear, concise reports is required.
•Ability to communicate effectively is required.
•Qualified to perform high precision measurements and receipt inspections.
•Electrical inspection experience, capabilities, and qualification are highly desirable.
•Familiarity with ASME, AWS, IEEE, NFPA and other construction codes.

Certificates and Licenses
•AWS Certified Welding Inspector REQUIRED
•Certification per ANSI N45.2.6 is desirable
•Certification in EPRI- VT-1, -2, -3,-4, or certification in Nondestructive Testing to SNT-TC- 1A Level II for Visual Testing (VT) and Penetrant Testing (PT) is desirable.
•Certification as ASQ Quality Inspector is desirable

Physical Requirements* (if applicable – identify physical requirements that are required for the employee to perform the job’s core duties.)

Requirements for the employee to occasionally work in awkward positions, bend, climb, lift and/or move heavy objects - estimate frequency and amount of weight involved. Travel and schedule flexibility is required. Must be able to bend, climb ladders, and squat to inspect equipment. Occasionally may be required to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work standing up for extended periods and walk significant distances across PPPL sites and at vendor/supplier locations.

WORKING CONDITIONS (Shift work, onsite or remote work, hours and other unique job conditions)
•Willingness to travel to vendors/suppliers is required Occasional 2nd shift work will be required
