Edgewater is seeking qualified Fire Protection Engineers for upcoming opportunities supporting ongoing operations at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, TN.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Seeking Senior, Mid-Level and Entry-Level Fire Protection Engineers to support to all aspects of fire protection engineering at ORNL’s facilities, both nuclear and non-nuclear.

These positions will support ORNL Fire Protection Engineering in providing the Laboratory Modernization Division (LMD) with FPE design, design review, and construction oversite. Support activities, as directed by the ORNL FPE task lead for LMD, may include providing ORNL FPE input into project Statement of Work (SOW), System Requirement Documents (SRD), tailoring generic FPE design criteria to specific projects, and reviewing and commenting on schematic design drawings, basis of design documents, design development drawings, project specifications, and draft certified for construction documents. Support activities, as directed by the ORNL FPE task lead for LMD, may also include review of shop drawings (sprinkler and fire alarm) and fire alarm programming efforts (review of new/revised FACP SDUs) during the construction phase of a project. Support activities, as directed by the ORNL FPE task lead for LMD, may also include participating in project conference calls and ORNL FPE coordination meetings.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “Q” security clearance is required.

Senior Fire Protection Engineer (Sr FPE)
• 20+ years’ experience
• Meets qualifications for Professional Member status in the Society of FPE (actual membership not required)
• Experience commensurate with senior-level FPE
• BS in Fire Protection or other related Engineering discipline
• Significant experience may include but is not limited to:
o Professional Engineer
o Documented FPE-related experience in DOE and/or commercial nuclear power operations
o Author /Publisher of relevant technical papers
o Documented Fire Hazards Analysis development
o Documented and approved equivalency and alternative method approaches to code compliance and risk reduction
o Participation in code (NFPA, ICC, etc.) development process

Fire Protection Engineer II (FPE II)
• 8-19 years’ experience
• Meets qualifications for Professional Member status in the Society of FPE
• (actual membership not required)
• Experience commensurate with progressive mid-career FPE
• BS in Fire Protection or other related Engineering discipline or
• Significant equivalent experience may include but is not limited to:
o Documented FPE-related experience in DOE and/or commercial
o nuclear power operations
o Other relevant professional certifications and credentials
o Documented Fire Protection Facility Assessments

Fire Protection Engineer I (FPE I)
• 1-7 years’ experience
• Experience commensurate with junior level FPE
• BS in Fire Protection or other related Engineering discipline or
• Significant equivalent experience may include but is not limited to:
o Documented FPE related experience
o Other relevant professional certifications and credentials

RESPONSIBILITIES
To varying degrees each of the positions above may be required to perform some or all of the following activities:
1. Conduct FPE Assessments (FPEAs) on ORNL facilities as assigned. These assessments evaluate the components of the facility fire protection features such as fixed suppression and alarm systems; fire area separation and compartmentalization; means of egress and other life safety elements; fire exposures; building construction; building occupancy and associated hazards; fire loss potentials; and business interruption potential.
2. Preparation and/or review of Fire Hazards Analysis (FHA) documents for specific facilities. FHAs are combined FPEAs and contain similar elements as the FPE Assessments.
3. Serve on committees, task teams, etc. as-assigned, to provide interpretation, guidance, and oversight of fire protection issues.
4. Provide fire protection related design guidance and design review services. This may include development and review of design criteria, development and review of preliminary/design FHAs, technical and code compliance input to design and to the design review process.
5. Provide recommendations to ORNL FPE and other levels of ORNL management, as requested, on industrial loss prevention techniques and fire protection issues.
6. Provide on-site FPE expertise and FPE staff augmentation to engineering disciplines and other Lab groups to ensure fire protection issues are effectively addressed in construction specifications and design drawings for new facilities and facility renovations.
7. Work closely with environmental, health, and safety organizations to ensure that fire protection issues, which many times overlap into other programs, receive the necessary coordination and attention.
8. Perform specific FPE-related evaluations or analyses as requested and as assigned by ORNL FPE staff.

DELIVERABLES/SUBMITTALS
Technical documents and assessments (FHAs, FPEAs, etc.) deliverables as directed by ORNL FPE staff.
