Principal Engineer - Fire Protection Design Engineer- Alarm & Detection Systems
US Citizenship Required - 1 position
SRNS @ SRS, Aiken, SC
RFQ# 1354 / contract: 1 year with 2 opt years / Deadline 4/23/2025
SUMMARY:
● Define the scope of technical programs and develop effective, quality solutions to challenges that involve
unique or controversial problems. Creatively meet all company and industry requirements and apply site
systems to achieve quality, timely, and cost-effective results. Give quality guidance and assistance to less
senior professionals on related tasks.
● Apply technical experience in the field of specialization or broad-based experience in multiple technical
fields to resolve complex problems.
● Incorporate advanced technical practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical
requirements, application of new or special materials or processes, and complex coordination or oversight
requirements into problem solving and program planning.
● Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise
in a functional area(s} of technical knowledge.
● Provide direction and position responsibility both inside and outside department lines on programs
seeking new approaches to problems and new applications of existing engineering or scientific principles.
● Evaluate the results of programs and prepare reports and recommendations based on these evaluations.
● Identify and recommend improvements where established technology components and methodology are
inadequate for a solution.
● Keep informed of the advancement of technology as applied in one's area of technology.
● Prepare plans including schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements for solving technical tasks
identified by management.
● Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor budget expenditures, and review work quality.
● Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscript form to customers, colleagues, and
management.
● Occasionally, prepare reports for external publication.
● Enhance expertise in the field by leading local technical societies.
● Demonstrate creative ability through the medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering
reports, technical papers, and articles.
● Provide design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS. Primary responsibilities include
engineering task analysis, walk-downs, design development, and generation of design output documents,
including but not limited to: Location Plans, Connection Diagrams, Conduit/Block Diagrams, Logic
Diagrams, Panel Detail Drawings, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, and Battery Loading
Calculations, as per national consensus codes and standards.
● Provide technical support to site construction forces, start-up & testing, suppliers or subcontract
personnel. Prepare Data Sheets, Statements of Work, Procurement Specifications, Design Build
Specifications, and Purchase Requisitions.
● Engineering services shall be provided in accordance with SRNS processes and procedures. SRNS will
provide programmatic guidance.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
1. Ph.D. degree in an applicable science or engineering discipline and 5+ years' experience.
OR A
MS with 8+ years' experience.
OR A
BS with 10+ years' experience or more.
Graduate of an ABET-accredited Fire Protection Engineering program.
OR
BS degree in an engineering discipline and at least one of the following:
a. Registered Professional Engineer in Fire Protection.
b. Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) NICET Level III/IV certification in the Fire Alarm,
Detection and Signaling area of expertise
c. Professional or Fellow Member in the SFPE
2. Candidate must demonstrate ten (10) years of recent design experience, four (4) of which shall be in the
following area of expertise:
Fire Alarm, Detection and Signaling Design - General knowledge of electrical/control systems,
connection diagrams, layout plans, logic diagrams, panel layout details, P&IDs, and battery loading
calculations
3. Working knowledge of NFPA Codes and Standards, and National Consensus Codes and
Standards such as NFPA 13, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 90A, NFPA 101, IBC, and various other
ISA and IEEE standards
4. Experience with 2D MicroStation Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD)
5. Ability to operate Windows and Microsoft Office Applications
6. The candidate must be able to perform weekly field walk-downs of the job site to inspect the engineering
work being performed. These walk downs may involve construction sites with uneven surfaces and work
in
progress, walking for distances of over half a mile, climbing ladders to access remote areas, dressing
Out in protective clothing and environments where a respirator is required.
7. The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) "Q" security clearance.
8. Previous SRS Design Engineering or DOE facility experience
9. Proficiency in using MicroStation 2D Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software.
10. Previous SRS design experience and familiarity with the processes and procedures for providing
engineering support to SRS facilities.
