*Job Description:
Overview: The US ITER Project at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks applications for a Mechanical Design Engineer. The selected candidate will be instrumental in developing new technologies and components for the ITER Project�s Diagnostic Residual Gas Analyzer (DRGA) system. The DRGA is a multi-sensor instrument that is responsible for measuring the composition of gases in the ITER.
Basic Qualifications: This position requires a BS degree in mechanical, or a related field, with a minimum of five years of professional experience in design and fabrication of high-performance components and systems. The candidate should demonstrate a diverse background and understanding of the following topics:
� Mechanical Design including at least a basic understanding of mechanics and thermal response of materials
� Able to read, understand, and apply engineering standards
� Able to specify and select components and provide ordering information required to procure components.
� Can demonstrate technical writing and technical documentation abilities
� Experience in hands-on troubleshooting of mechatronic systems
� Testing: designing, executing, and documenting tests that answer specific questions
� Basic understanding of computer simulation packages (such as FEA and/or CFD) as they apply to engineering design, ability to perform basic analyses, validate, and report
� Basic Engineering Drawing creation, checking, and component procurement
� Candidate must be a self-starter and able to work independently with diverse teams.
� Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction and communication with technical peers, program managers, collaborators, and sponsors.
Preferred Qualifications:
� Experience in nuclear fusion or fission technology or a closely related field is a plus.
� Experience working in assembly of complex devices is highly desirable.
� The candidate may be required to lead receipt and acceptance of components and/or component/system testing.
� Design and deployment of scientific or research diagnostic systems, including data gathering, analysis, and reporting
� The candidate should demonstrate a diverse background and understanding of some of the following topics:
o Vacuum systems
o Mechanical Design including at least a basic understanding of mechanics, fluids, controls, dynamics, and thermal response of materials
o Mechanical utilities design, installation, commissioning, and operations experience
o Programming, Mechatronics / Data Acquisition and Logging
o Basic understanding of computer networks, wireless communication, PWM signals, digital coms, basic encryption protocols
Procurement, assembly, and testing experience.
