Advisory Engineer - Solid Waste Technical Advisor
US Citizenship Required - 1 position

SUMMARY:
Initiate own technical programs and make recommendations to management on technical programs based on analysis of customer needs and technology trends, reach solutions to the most complex technical problems in field(s) of expertise, and influence solutions in neighboring disciplines.
Apply technical experience in field of specialization or broad-based experience in multiple technical fields, and use other technical resources in the company and external resources, to resolve complex problems. Incorporate advanced technical practices and various complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes, and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
Provides leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and is recognized as having expertise in a functional area of technical specialization. Recommend research programs for others in the group and assist in that planning. Develop solutions to the most complex technical problems in areas of expertise and adjacent technical fields. Influences the technical direction of other department parts, acts as a technical communicator across disciplines to optimize the creative solution of technical problems.
Conceive needed programs for self and others in the department. Put needs in perspective with other technical needs at SRNS. Sponsor new ideas in the department. Prepare plans, including schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements, for solving major technical tasks for the division. Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor budget expenditures, and review the quality of work performed.
Include research, development, testing, and quality assurance requirements. Communicate results verbally and in manuscript form. Report regularly on the results and represent SRNS and SRS in technical areas to oversight groups and professional societies. Mentor less senior professionals in communication skills. Maintain excellent technical credibility by contributing significantly toward meeting Site missions and goals, which may be demonstrated by issuing reports, making presentations, and /or involvement in national technical organizations. Mentor less senior professionals as a means of transferring technical knowledge and insight. Recommend engineering and technology research, development, and application programs for others and assist in the planning of such programs. Demonstrate commitment to TQ concepts by active leadership leading to successful implementation of Division and Department TQ Initiatives. Be a resource for TQ initiatives in the Department and Division.
Provide Solid Waste engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS. Primary responsibilities include TRU Waste, Mixed Waste, and Low-Level Waste support. Expertise is needed in WIPP Acceptable Knowledge process, SRS waste tracking data systems, waste characterization techniques and application, and safety basis development.
Develop solutions to technical task objectives within Solid Waste engineering. Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems, prepare schedules, budgets and personnel requirements for solving technical tasks, communicate results verbally and/or in writing. Provide mentoring and/or guidance to less senior professionals.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
PhD degree and about 15 years of experience
MS degree and 17 years experience
BS degree and about 21 years of experience.
Experience in Chemical Engineering or a related technical field
Candidate must demonstrate ten years of experience (within the last 15 years) in the nuclear or chemical process industry and possess a working knowledge of Solid Waste
Candidate must demonstrate engineering ability for waste characterization techniques and application of WIPP disposition requirements. Experience with application and development of TRU and solid waste characterization tracking software.
Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of nuclear and criticality safety principles and their application to facilities, technical knowledge of facility process and support systems as well in area of responsibility and to apply engineering judgment, often in complex situations, to determine acceptability or proposed solutions, compliance with DSA or TSR requirements.
Candidate must be able to produce written documents with clearly organized structure and grammar.
Candidate must communicate orally with management, project team members, DOE Customers and State and Federal regulators.
Must be able to pass SRS Radiological Worker Training, if required.
Experience in source term calculations and additional atmospheric transport modeling and simulation software (e.g., ALOHA, AXAIR, AERMOD, etc.) would be preferred.
