Hydraulic Engineering and Erosion Protection Support (remote, part-time)

We are seeking qualified candidates to perform the following:

Position Description and Duties:
The subcontractor will collaborate with Legacy Management Support (LMS) personnel from the Applied Studies and Technology (AS&T) Group by providing erosion subject matter expert advisory services to the Contractor, as requested. The subcontractor shall draw from: The subcontractor's extensive background in the evaluation of erosion protection designs and construction, and the subcontractor's detailed knowledge of regulations, licensing procedures, and policies pertaining to erosion and engineered waste containment barrier systems. The subcontractor will provide support to the Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management (LM) and the LMS Contractor in areas related to evaluating erosion features and erosional processes and assessing efficacy of existing and proposed long-term erosion protection measures at UMTRCA and similar disposal sites.

Provided services are expected to include:
- Support execution and reporting of flume studies for the AS&T Reasonable Assurance for Design and Repair (RADAR) project to assist LM and the LMS Contractor to evaluate the erosion protection performance of various UMTRCA disposal cell cover system components.
- Collaborate with AS&T personnel in developing a draft and final AS&T Active Management Procedures for Erosion Repair (AMPER) report to assist LM and the LMs Contractor in developing and implementing repairs to address erosion issues occurring at various UMTRCA and other disposal cell cover systems.
- Assist in developing a draft and final AS&T Alternative Cover Design Review (AltCDR) Guidance Document to assist LM and the LMS Contractor in reviewing designs for, and managing erosion issues associated with, UMTRCA and other alternative (e.g. evapotranspiration)-type disposal cell cover systems.

Required Qualifications:
- Extensive experience studying UMTRCA disposal cells, NRC reclamation and decommissioning requirements for UMTRCA sites, and thorough understanding of respective NRC erosion and radon regulations and guidance documents.
- Proven experience collaborating with NRC and research universities on engineered soils performance studies, investigations, and regulations and regulatory compliance.
- Proven performance with technical reviews of flooding analyses, erosion, erosion protection, and engineered barriers at NRC-licensed facilities.
- Substantial experience designing and overseeing large -scale research studies and related quantitative analyses to: Investigate the hydraulic performance of rock riprap- and soil-covered UMTRA cover systems and
evaluate and develop analytical methods for calculating velocities of turbulent overtopping and internal flow in disposal cell cover systems that incorporate a surficial rock riprap layer and underlying bedding layer; and evaluate erosion potential of soil materials/systems in natural systems.
- Extensive experience in the development of and managing erosion research studies including small and large-scale laboratory hydraulic flume tests.
- Authored, or otherwise developed peer-reviewed, industry approved technical guidance documents about the operation, maintenance, and repair of erosion on UMTRCA covers.
- Experience in working with NRC in developing analytic methods used by UMTRA project designers for design of UMTRA disposal cell cover systems, including both conventional (riprap) and alternative (evapotranspiration) type covers.
