Electrical Controls/Design Engineer - Benton Harbor, MI
The Electrical Controls/Design Engineer designs, develops, tests, and oversees the implementation of electrical control systems,
equipment, and machinery to provide the best product and/or system solution for our customers' needs. While supporting both our
onsite staff and field representatives with technical documentation, training, troubleshooting, and custom integration solutions.
Applying efficient OEM manufacturing techniques, safety protocols, and keeping in accordance with both industry standards and
regulations such as NEC, UL, CSA, NFPA, and OSHA. Additionally, the position will support both standard and custom work order
processing by working across the organization to translate customer specifications into internal manufacturing requirements. Using
CAD, ERP, and internal configuration software to document submittals, shop drawings and Bills of Material.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Read, comprehend, and interpret customer specifications and system schedules to design and provide the best applicable
solutions.
- Utilize engineering 2D/3D CAD software (AUTODESK), Microsoft Office, and other tools to aid in the design, development,
and sizing of electrical system components, motor circuitry and machinery control. With the creation of technical
documents such as blueprints, schematics (both ladder and one-line), bills of material, sequence of operations, operator
manuals, system specifications, product literature, and both engineering change notices and order.
- Collaborate and work cross-functionally with multiple team members, engineers, sales-staff, vendors, project managers,
contractors, field reps and customers to ensure smooth implementation, training, and troubleshooting of electrical designs.
- Assure compliance of design with company guidelines, customer requirements and regulatory standards such as NYCHA,
UL, NEC etc.
- Serve as a technical resource across the company to resolve any engineering issues from initial system quoting to logistics
and startups. Offering both technical and hands on support where needed.
- Build, wire, program, and test both simple and complex control systems. Utilizing relay logic, HMI/PLCs, programmable
relays, VFDs and both digital/mechanical process switching and instrumentation. (IDEC, Allen Bradley, IFM, Schneider,
Eaton, IMO)
- Provide alternative solutions in emergency situations to meet customer demands and production timelines, from specifying
alternative sequence of operations, component cross-overs/replacements, system upgrades, or simply the occasional extra
time required to finish a project on-time.
- Design and develop new customer solutions by researching and applying new technologies to deliver the necessary
functionality and qualities required to remain an industry leader.
- Create and document associated system drawings, schematics and BOMs using CAD and ERP.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
● Education
o Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering or Engineering Technology, with a concentration in electrical, controls,
and/or electromechanical disciplines, or Associate (AAS) with 2 years of relevant experience
o Minimum 8 years of experience with industrial electric controls, design, and logic in lieu of degree
● Knowledge
o Application of engineering fundamentals to develop and execute customer solutions.
o Excellent communication skills; ability to explain, advocate, and express facts and ideas in a convincing manner.
o Understanding of OEM electrical assembly and wiring techniques.
o Experience in design/build/test of a variety of UL certified control systems at various low voltages less than 600V
AC/DC. Consisting of PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, transformers, power supplies, relays, switches, alarms, pilot lights, etc.
o Experience in improving products and processes through component and assembly redesign or consolidation
efforts.
o Experience and aptitude for understanding, using, and troubleshooting electrical systems
o Required proficiency with standard hand tools required for general electrical maintenance, construction, and
repair, along with technical tools such as Voltage/Amp/OHM or Multimeters.
● Technical
o Proficient in Microsoft Office and Autodesk (ACAD, ACADe, Inventor, VAULT) or similar CAD design software.
o Ability to read and write work orders, manuals, performance specifications, machine schedules, wiring diagrams,
schematics, and engineering drawings.
o Working knowledge of NEC and UL-508a requirements. (Must become UL-MTR certified within 90-days of
employment, at expense of employer)
o Experience with Function-Block and Ladder logic programming and troubleshooting for simple smart relay and
HMI/PLC systems. (Wind-LGC/LDR/NV4, RSLogix 500, IO-Link, etc.)
o VFD and Digital Sensor programming startup, and testing (Eaton, Allen Bradley, IMO, Franklin, IFM-MONEO, Turk)
o Experience with building management systems and standard communication protocols. (BACnet, Ethernet,
Modbus, IO-Link)
o Familiarity with ERP systems such as Infor, QuickBooks, MS Dynamics 365.
