Job Title: Principal Engineer - Fire Protection Design Engineer – Alarm and Detection Systems
Duration: 1 year with 2 option periods (option periods are not guaranteed and are executed at the discretion of the hiring manager)
Location: 100% Onsite (local candidates or willing to relocate at candidate's expense)
Short Summary about Job:
Provide design engineering staff augmentation support. Primary responsibilities include engineering task analysis, walk-downs, design development and generation of design output documents including Location Plans, Connection Diagrams, Conduit/Block Diagrams, Logic Diagrams, Panel Detail Drawings, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, and Battery Loading Calculations in accordance with national consensus codes and standards. Provide technical support to site construction forces, start-up & testing, suppliers or subcontract personnel. Prepare Data Sheets, Statements of Work, Procurement Specifications, Design Build Specifications, and Purchase Requisitions.
Required Qualifications
Education: Ph.D. degree in applicable science or engineering discipline and 5+ years' experience, OR MS with 8+ years' experience, OR BS with 10+ years' experience or more
Additional Education: Graduate of an ABET accredited Fire Protection Engineering program, OR BS degree in an engineering discipline and at least one of the following: Registered Professional Engineer in Fire Protection; SFPE NICET Level III/IV certification in Fire Alarm, Detection and Signaling; Professional or Fellow Member in the SFPE
Candidate must demonstrate 10 years of recent design experience, four (4) of which shall be in Fire Alarm, Detection and Signaling Design - General knowledge of electrical/control systems, connection diagrams, layout plans, logic diagrams, panel layout details, P&IDs, and battery loading calculations
Working knowledge of NFPA Codes and Standards, and National Consensus Codes and Standards such as NFPA 13, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 90A, NFPA 101, IBC, and various other ISA and IEEE standards
Experience with 2D MicroStation Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD)
Ability to operate Windows Microsoft Office Applications
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates who have possessed an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years
Previous Design Engineering or DOE facility experience
Proficiency in using MicroStation 2D Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software
Previous design experience and familiarity with the processes and procedures for providing engineering support to facilities
Miscellaneous/Additional Information:
Work Schedule: Mon-Thurs 6:45am-5:15pm. Up to a 40-hour work week is scheduled. Various work schedules are utilized including 5/8s (8 hour/day; five days per week), 4/10's (10 hours/day; four days per week), and 9/80's (9 hours/day, five days on week AA and four days on week BB). Each workday has 30-minute lunch. Overtime will be expected at times to meet deliverables.
Estimated Hours Per Year: 2080 ST / 800 OT
Physical Requirements: Candidate must be able to perform weekly field walk downs of the job site for the engineering work being performed. These walk downs may involve construction sites with uneven surfaces and work in progress, walking for distances of over half a mile, climbing of ladders to access remote areas, dressing out in protective clothing and environments where a respirator is required.
Security Clearance: An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties. After award, the selected candidate will be notified when to apply for a clearance based on specific work assignments. Subcontractor must have an active eFOCI registration and approved Facility Level Clearance with DOE/NNSA.
Travel: Travel will be reimbursed per the terms of the Travel Compensation Schedule. If allowed to travel on official business, travel must be fully approved by hiring manager 30 days prior to travel dates. Travel cannot take place until it has been approved by procurement via a fully funded requisition. Travel to conferences or trainings will not be reimbursed.
