Overview
This role provides senior-level architectural and engineering support for major nuclear and industrial facility projects. The Principal Engineer/Architect develops design criteria, space planning solutions, conceptual design packages, construction drawings, fire protection design details, and CSI specifications while coordinating closely with structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical disciplines. Work includes oversight of vendor submittals, support for construction execution, and full compliance with applicable national codes and standards. The position requires significant experience delivering architectural design in industrial or nuclear environments using established site processes.
Primary Duties
• Execute architectural analysis of existing facilities and perform space planning
• Develop design criteria, conceptual designs, technical calculations, and construction drawings
• Lead fire protection design efforts including fire barriers and penetration seals
• Coordinate design with structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering groups
• Research materials, develop specifications, and prepare full CSI formatted specifications
• Perform building code research, analysis, and compliance verification
• Review vendor documents and provide field support during construction
• Conduct weekly field walkdowns, including navigating uneven surfaces, ladders, and PPE
• Prepare technical reports, recommendations, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans
• Monitor schedule progress, budget performance, and work quality
• Provide leadership and technical guidance to junior staff
• Support program objectives using required site processes and procedures
• Communicate results to customers, colleagues, and management through reports and presentations

Required Qualifications
Education
• PhD in an engineering or scientific discipline with 5 or more years of experience
OR
• MS with 8 or more years of experience
OR
• BS with 10 or more years of experience
Plus
• BS in Architecture with 10 or more years of recent architectural experience supporting nuclear or industrial facilities
Experience / Skills
• Industrial facility layout design experience for industrial equipment and manufacturing spaces
• Commercial architectural practice experience
• Working knowledge of applicable national codes and standards including IBC, AISC, ACI, AWS, NFPA, OSHA, CFR, and ABA
• Working knowledge of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code
• Experience preparing CSI formatted specifications
• Passive Fire Protection design experience including fire barriers and penetration seals
• MicroStation proficiency (AutoCAD acceptable if willing to learn MicroStation)
• Ability to perform weekly field walkdowns including ladders, uneven surfaces, and PPE
Clearance Requirements
• Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q clearance
• Active or recent Q or L within the past 2 years preferred
• Subcontractor must hold active eFOCI registration and Facility Clearance
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous SRS design engineering or DOE facility experience
• Familiarity with site processes and procedures
• Facility security architectural experience
• Experience with cost estimating and quantity takeoffs
