Senior Materials Engineer – Contract
Location: Bellevue, Washington (On-site)
Company: System One
Rate: $52 – $85/hour
Type: Long-term Contract

System One is seeking a Senior Materials Engineer to join a high-performing team of engineers focused on materials processing, supply chain development, and supplier qualification for next-generation sodium-cooled fast reactors. This role supports the development of key materials and components for the Natrium reactor core, including sourcing and testing materials to support qualification of components and systems.

Responsibilities:

Lead technical development of suppliers to increase technology readiness of key materials and components for the Natrium reactor core.

Develop material and process specifications for specialized materials (e.g., HT9, Grade 92, nickel-base alloys, austenitic stainless steels) and product forms (billet, bar, rod, wire, heavy-walled tube, small-diameter tubing).

Collaborate with suppliers on material and process specifications and provide input to design teams to ensure product performance meets design and manufacturing requirements.

Support supplier selection processes including RFPs and team evaluations.

Provide oversight of supplier projects, working with contract administrators and supplier engineers to ensure delivery of required data and deliverables.

Coordinate technical review of supplier deliverables and ensure appropriate responses.

Assist with supplier audits per ASME NQA-1-2015.

Design and execute test programs to evaluate the effect of manufacturing variability on material properties and performance.

Key Qualifications and Skills:

Minimum of 6 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 3 years with a Master’s degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Strong understanding of metallurgy, including fabrication and thermomechanical processing of ferrous (e.g., ferritic-martensitic steels) and nonferrous (e.g., nickel-base) alloys.

Demonstrated experience developing requirements specifications, defining supplier work scope (SOWs, RFPs), and providing technical oversight of supplier projects.

Knowledge of nuclear reactor design impacts on materials is a plus.

Ability to work independently to solve challenging technical problems.
