System Protection Technician - Detroit or DC
Duration: 6 months
ST Pay Rate: $25 - 29.00 / hr ST
Work Location: Detroit metro area or Washington DC are
Position Overview

In this role within the System Protection Development Program, the Technician will participate in the installation, maintenance, and corrective actions associated with:

• Protective relaying schemes

• Communication systems

• SCADA components

• Operational Technology (OT) systems

These systems support field facilities. This role is structured to build foundational knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for performing System Protection tasks.

As experience is gained, responsibilities will increase in complexity, allowing for greater independence and proficiency. The Technician will work alongside senior team members during construction projects and maintenance activities and will be expected to interpret engineering design packages and execute assigned tasks effectively.

Key Responsibilities
• Work alongside senior team members to gain practical field experience

• Prepare and participate in Pre-Job Briefs to identify hazards and critical tasks

• Assist with installation and commissioning of protection and control equipment

• Verify functionality and communication of protection assets during installation

• Contribute to verification of station alarms

• Participate in acceptance testing of voltage and current sensing devices

• Assist in inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of protective relays and associated components

• Maintain and test protection systems within defined maintenance intervals to meet regulatory and reliability standards

• Participate in electromechanical and microprocessor relay repair and troubleshooting

• Complete all compliance paperwork and supporting documentation

• Apply Cyber Security controls per Dominion Energy standards

• Support on-site ET organization during Nuclear Outages (as needed)

• Properly apply electrical clearance boundary (tagout) and Human Performance work zone strategies

• Coordinate with project stakeholders during construction activities

• Confirm primary equipment operates per manufacturer specifications

• Conduct acceptance testing of voltage and current sensing devices independently

• Verify engineering protective relay setpoints and logic equations

• Assist in installation of network-based protection schemes and emerging technologies

• Perform maintenance activities to ensure system reliability and regulatory compliance

• Perform relay repair and troubleshooting with minimal guidance as proficiency increases

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
System Protection Technician T1 Qualifications
o years of relevant experience (with required education outlined below)

• Basic understanding of substation equipment and protection system components

Knowledge Of:
• Testing electro-mechanical based relays

• Microprocessor-based relay technology

• Logic diagrams and variable equations

• IEEE device numbers

Skills:
• Strong organizational skills

• Verbal and written communication skills

• Computer proficiency

Abilities:
• Use hand-held multimeters

• Navigate control drawings, schematics, and equipment nameplates

• Recognize electrical hazards

• Demonstrate self-motivation

Education Requirements
Minimum education required:

• Associate's Degree OR

• Advanced Post Secondary Diploma OR

• Qualified Military Experience (outlined below)

Preferred Disciplines (by Spring 2026):
• Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology

• Mechanical Engineering Technology

• Electromechanical Technology

• Electronics Technology

• Instrumentation Technology

• Mechatronic Technology

• Comparable technical disciplines may be substituted

Military Alternative Qualification
• Minimum 5 years of military experience

• At least 1 year of technical training in:

• Electrical theory

• AC/DC circuits

• Basic electrical principles and calculations

• Ohm's Law

• Fault isolation

• Multimeter applications

Licenses, Certifications & Physical Requirements
• Weight restriction: 290 lbs (equipment limits)

• Must be able to lift 50 lbs

Working Conditions
• Cold environments: 76-100%

• Heat exposure: 76-100%

• Outdoors: 76-100%

• Operating machinery: 76-100%

• Office work: Up to 25%

• Travel: Up to 25%

• Work performed in hot, cold, and/or inclement weather conditions
