Mechanical Engineer (Gears & Drivetrain Systems)
Work Location: Remote (As-needed trips to client office in CA OR project site in UT)
Rate: Not Defined / need Candidate's requested rate
Duration: 3-6 Months (immediate start)
Hours: 40+

The required qualifications are as follows:

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer with deep specialization in gear systems and drivetrain design to support the Ward 250 SMR development program. This role will focus on the design, analysis, and optimization of mechanical drive systems critical to reactor operations, including control rod drive mechanisms, coolant pumps, and other rotating equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and analyze gear systems and drivetrain assemblies for nuclear-grade rotating equipment
• Perform detailed calculations for gear tooth stress, contact patterns, and load distribution
• Conduct failure mode analysis and reliability assessments for critical mechanical systems
• Develop specifications for gear materials, heat treatment, and manufacturing tolerances
• Collaborate with design teams on integration of drivetrain systems with reactor components
• Review and validate vendor designs and manufacturing processes for gear components
• Prepare technical documentation, calculations, and design reports
• Interface with nuclear engineers, designers, and manufacturing teams

Required Qualifications:

Education:
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required
• Master's degree preferred

Experience:
• 5+years of mechanical engineering experience with focus on gears and drivetrains
• Proven experience with drivetrain analysis and optimization
• Experience with high-reliability or safety-critical mechanical systems
• Knowledge of gear manufacturing processes and quality control

Physical Requirements: Must be capable of climbing, walking, kneeling, bending, and lifting as part of daily job responsibilities. Ability to lift a minimum of 35 - 60 lbs.
