Fire Protection Subject Matter Expert
Remote (As-needed trips to project site in UT)
Tentatively 10 hours/week
Duration: 1 month+
The Fire Protection SME will be responsible for the following within the defined engagement scope:
• Perform technical review of fire protection engineering documentation, analyses, and design deliverables associated with the WARD250 project
• Evaluate compliance with applicable fire protection codes and standards (e.g., NFPA, IBC, DOE O 420.1C, and other relevant regulations)
• Provide written or verbal subject matter expert findings, comments, and recommendations on reviewed materials
• Identify gaps, deficiencies, or areas of concern in fire protection design or analysis and propose technically sound corrective approaches
• Coordinate and communicate review findings with Valar Atomics project team as needed
• Support resolution of technical questions or open items related to fire protection within the scope of the engagement
• Deliver all review outputs within agreed-upon schedule and in a format acceptable to the client
Required:
• Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline
• Minimum of 7-10 years of professional experience in fire protection engineering, with demonstrated expertise in technical review and SME-level analysis
• Familiarity with applicable fire protection codes and standards including NFPA codes (e.g., NFPA 101, NFPA 13, NFPA 72) and other industry or regulatory requirements
• Prior experience supporting nuclear, energy, or complex federal/industrial facility projects
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly document and convey technical findings
Preferred:
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license - Utah licensure is preferred; however, candidates with equivalent fire protection engineering expertise will be considered regardless of current state licensure
• Experience with DOE or NRC fire protection requirements and guidance documents (e.g., DOE O 420.1C, 10 CFR 50 Appendix R)
• Familiarity with advanced reactor or nuclear facility design and associated fire protection challenges
• Previous engagement in a short-term consulting or independent technical review capacity
