Talascend is currently seeking a Nuclear Shielding and Criticality Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.
Overview
The role involves working on the Natrium® demonstration project, focusing on performing MCNP calculations related to shielding, energy deposition, neutron fluence, activation, and criticality. The candidate must be self-motivated, capable of working effectively remotely, and possess strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
Perform MCNP calculations to support shielding, criticality, and other nuclear safety assessments.
Document calculations and methodology in calculation packages.
Utilize software tools such as MCNP, ADVANTG, Attila/Attila4MC, and computational drafting tools as needed.
Work within regulatory guidelines and quality standards, including NQA-1 requirements.
Communicate findings effectively through written reports and oral presentations.
Qualifications
B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering with 10+ years’ experience
M.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering with 6+ years’ experience
Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering with 3+ years’ experience
Strong MCNP skills and experience with radiation shielding calculations for gammas and neutrons
Familiarity with variance reduction techniques using MCNP and features like surface source read/write, mesh tallies, and weight windows
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work within regulatory guidelines with professionalism
Experience working under NQA-1 quality program is desirable
Strong computational expertise preferred
Experience with Attila / Attila4MC, CAD tools (SolidWorks, SpaceClaim/ANSYS, Cubit) is a plus
Fast reactor experience is a plus
Strong programming skills in any language, especially Python, is a plus
Motivated to learn nuclear reactor concepts to support engineering team
