Sr. Engineer, Instrumentation and Control Systems (Nuclear)
Job Description
This role involves engineering solutions for instrumentation and control systems within commercial nuclear power plants and test facilities. The focus will be on reactor protection safety-related systems, augmented quality, regulatory treatment of non-safety systems, and plant investment protection systems.
Responsibilities
Identify, develop, evaluate, introduce, and manage engineering solutions for instrumentation and control systems.
Apply control theory, mathematical modeling, and simulation to design control systems with desired behaviors, including control logic functionality across modes of operation, setting boundaries, optimization, closed loop or feedback control algorithms, sensors, hardware, and software development.
Prepare designs for reactor protection systems (e.g., neutron monitoring, reactor trip, emergency core cooling, engineered safety features, isolation functions).
Prepare designs for augmented quality assurance systems (e.g., diverse actuation or protection, reactivity control rod, steam bypass, and pressure).
Prepare designs for plant investment protection systems (e.g., anticipatory trip, feedwater level, reactor water cleanup, shutdown cooling, fuel and auxiliary pool cooling, leak detection and isolation).
Prepare designs for non-safety-related balance of plant systems (e.g., service water, instrument air, AC or DC electric loads, diesel generators, HVAC).
Perform, lead, or manage design and related technical scope through the progression of front-end engineering design, conceptual, preliminary or intermediate, and detailed or final design.
Prepare and maintain documents, reports, specifications, databases, and diagrams using data-centric digital tools with rigorous requirements, change control, and configuration management.
Essential Skills
Strong history of controls and nuclear experience.
Experience in instrumentation and controls, nuclear, and systems engineering.
Experience in design requirements, specification, PLC, DCS, IEC, and monitoring systems.
Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent 4-year technical degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Computer Science or Technology, Software or Systems, Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics.
10 years of experience in heavy industries such as nuclear, power, process, marine, oil & gas, military, aerospace, medical, or pharmaceutical.
10 years of experience preparing system design requirements, specifications, documentation, and detailed design artifacts using digital tools.
10 years of experience preparing diagrams using digital tools and developing physics-based algorithms for simulation and modeling.
10 years of experience using IEC Standards 60xxx, 61xxx, and 62xxx series.
10 years of experience with PC and productivity software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, Visio).
10 years of experience in design, application, requisition, or field engineering of safety significant instrumentation, control, and monitoring systems.
5 years of experience with application, requisition, or field engineering in programmable logic controllers (PLC) or top-tier DCS in complex, real-time operating systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) nuclear control systems and design implementation.
Work Environment
This position offers a fully remote work environment. There is no travel expected, although infrequent meetings or workshops may occur in Wilmington, NC.
