Position Details: The Civil Field Engineer/Inspector will support a 12-week assignment to supervise and provide QC for heavy civil works at the Bakersfield Synchronous Condenser site, as a part of the LCRA TSC Bakersfield Dynamic Reactive Substation Upgrade project. The project will involve installing two synchronous condensers at the 345 kV Bakersfield substation to enhance grid stability, which includes 175 MVAR capacity each (350 MVA total) to support grid reliability.

Job Description:The Civil Field Engineer /Inspector will support Quality Control for the installation of two 175 MVAR synchronous condensers (total 350 MVAR capacity) and associated infrastructure, including step-up transformers, foundations, civil/structural modifications, and site upgrades at the existing 345 kV Bakersfield substation. This role focuses on ensuring civil and structural elements of the project meet design specifications, industry standards, and quality control protocols to enhance grid stability and reactive power support in the ERCOT West Texas system.

Key Responsibilities:Perform daily on-site inspections of civil construction activities, including foundation pouring, structural steel erection, equipment pad installation, grading, drainage, and concrete work for synchronous condenser units and related substation expansions. Verify compliance with approved civil/structural drawings, specifications, codes, and project quality plans during the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) process. Conduct material inspections and testing to ensure adherence to quality standards. Document observations, non-conformances, test results, and daily progress reports; maintain accurate records for quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) and handover. Coordinate with contractors, EPC teams, engineers, and other representatives to resolve field issues related to civil work. Monitor safety practices and ensure construction aligns with environmental and regulatory requirements. Support punch list resolution and final acceptance inspections for civil components.

Education Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a closely related field, or an Associate's degree in a relevant technical discipline with additional work experience.
• 7+ years of hands-on field experience in civil construction inspection, quality control, or field engineering, preferably on high-voltage substation upgrades, power generation/transmission projects, heavy industrial sites, or similar infrastructure involving foundations, concrete structures, and equipment installations.
• Familiarity with substation civil/structural standards, construction drawings, and QC processes in utility-scale projects.

Physical Requirements: The role will involve significant field time but also requires regular presence on site. Candidate must have the ability to walk and stand for extended periods over uneven, rough terrain, have the ability to ascend/descend stairs and ladders, be able to tolerate work in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind, dust), loud noise, and vibrations. Must be able to lift/carry 50lb, as well as wear appropriate PPE when required. Must maintain sufficient stamina, balance, and agility to navigate the site safely without undue fatigue or risk.
