Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for a Structural Engineer opportunity in Oak Ridge, TN at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Project Background:
Operating at 85 MW, High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) is the highest flux reactor-based source of neutrons for research in the United States and provides one of the highest steady-state neutron fluxes of any research reactor in the world. The thermal and cold neutrons produced by HFIR are used to study physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, and biology. The Research Reactors Division (RRD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the HFIR, while HFIR Upgrades Project Office manages the HFIR Beryllium Reflector Replacement (HBRR) Project, which is being prepared for a major extended outage scheduled for 2029.
Scope of Work:
The HBRR Outage project will replace the life‑limiting beryllium reflector and other critical reactor vessel components, ensuring continued reactor operations for an additional 20 years. Preparatory activities for this outage will span multiple years.
Outage preparation activities include designing and fabricating custom lifting devices and fixtures, as well as performing structural analyses and calculations to support ongoing HBRR fabrication activities. The role also involves contributing to lift plans associated with reactor component assembly procedures and ensuring full compliance with ASME B30.20 standards for Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices.
In addition, the position requires performing seismic analyses and reviewing structural calculations in accordance with HFIR Safety Basis Procedures and applicable Department of Energy (DOE) standards and guidelines.
This position will be assigned to the Plant Life Extension Section within the RRD and will interact with the HFIR Upgrades Project Office supporting the HBRR activities.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform engineering calculations and interpret industry codes to support design development.
Provide engineering support for fabrication of HBRR components.
Perform structural analysis and calculations to support design or modification of hoisting and rigging tools.
Ensure HFIR structural specifications and drawings are developed in accordance with applicable DOE and industry codes and standards.
Provide written work package instructions to guide and document work activities.
Provide field technical support to craft supervisors and craft personnel as needed.
Provide technical support to other ongoing HFIR long term projects as needed.
Ensure engineering design documents and drawings are completed and properly managed within HFIR Configuration Management processes.
Basic Qualifications:
BS or MS degree in Structural Engineering (or Civil with concentration in structures or related engineering field) under an ABET accredited engineering curriculum
A minimum of five years of demonstrated structural engineering experience
Knowledgeable and proficient in material designs such as structural steel, stainless steel and concrete
Strong understanding of material handling practices
Proficiency in applying AISC, ACI, AWS, ASCE, ANSI, and other relevant codes and standards for facility design
Preferred Qualifications:
M.S. degree in Structural Engineering with at least 10 years of experience in DOE nuclear facilities and/or commercial nuclear plants
Experience with STAAD.Pro finite element analysis software
Strong understanding of DOE Natural Phenomena Hazard codes and regulations, as well as structural design codes such as ASCE 4, ASCE 43, ACI 349, and AISC N690
Experience with seismic qualification, analysis, and evaluation in accordance with DOE-STD-1020, DOE-STD-1021, and the International Building Code (IBC)
Other Job Requirements:
Must be a U.S. Citizen
