Talascend is currently seeking a Radiation Safety Officer for a direct hire opportunity with our client in Mountain Pass, California.

Overview

The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is responsible for managing all aspects of the radiation safety program at the site, including dose measurements, environmental monitoring, training, contamination controls, and inspections. The role also leads the industrial hygiene program and supports broader health and safety initiatives to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.

Responsibilities

Ensure radiological activities meet the conditions of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Radioactive Material License
Develop and implement the site’s radiation safety program and champion ALARA initiatives
Manage personal dosimetry, bioassay, gamma monitoring, and environmental sampling programs
Respond to radiological incidents and emergencies
Coordinate calibration of radiation measurement devices and maintain documentation
Conduct radiological training sessions for employees and contractors
Lead and manage the industrial hygiene program, including exposure assessments and sampling
Recommend controls to mitigate employee exposures and manage respiratory protection programs
Support compliance programs related to Cal/OSHA and MSHA regulations
Perform safety inspections, hazard assessments, and incident investigations
Participate in management of change reviews and emergency response planning
Deliver safety and hazard recognition training to the workforce
Ensure contractor compliance with safety policies
Maintain safety documentation and data entry in compliance tracking systems
Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years as a Radiation Safety Officer in an industrial setting with NORM
Bachelor’s degree in physical science, industrial hygiene, engineering, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
40-hour Radiation Safety Officer training
At least 160 hours of specialized health physics training applicable to byproduct material or NORM
Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA and MSHA occupational safety and health requirements
Valid driver’s license and good driving record
Demonstrated ability to perform duties through relevant experience, training, or education
Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing or leading industrial hygiene and occupational health programs
Certified Health Physicist (CHP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certifications
Experience in uranium and/or thorium recovery operations
Proficiency with software such as AutoCAD, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project
