I&C Engineer (Fusion Fuel Cycle Systems)

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Design, install, configure, and document programmable logic controller (PLC) based systems.

• Participate in the design, development, implementation and maintenance of user interfaces and dataacquisition system software applications.

• Develop, test, and verify software drivers for integrating new equipment.

• Perform fabrication, testing, operation and support of instruments used for prototype experimental systems.

• Execute verification and calibration procedures for system components.

• Install control and data acquisition cabling while demonstrating an understanding of proper cable management techniques.

• Fabricate and assemble connectors required to interface with various components.

• Collaborate with technical system experts to review and track design changes.

• Create documentation including requirements, specification, interface control, design, installation and test plans. Provide end user training on software.

• Work with a multidisciplinary team of research scientists and engineers in the areas of fusion energy research to maintain a high level of scientific productivity and experiment reliability.

• Provide operational support for plasma pellet injector systems. The position is typical office hours, but some off-hours and weekend support are required to support operational needs of end user facilities.

• Evaluate designs for reliability, availability, quality, maintainability and safety.

• Demonstrate quality assurance requirements for software processes align with the Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate software quality assurance program.

• Ensure a safe and efficient work environment and compliance with ESH&Q procedures and programs.

• Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of professional values and ethics.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BS degree in engineering, computer science, or related field with at least 5 years of applicable experience; MS degree with at least 3 years of applicable experience. A strong working knowledge of Rockwell Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLC systems, LabView programming and data acquisition systems. Experience with process control

instrumentation and control system components. Software development in Python. Capable of creating, interpreting, and following schematic documents, test procedures, manufacturer data sheets, and technical documents. Experience with various types of test equipment such as multimeters and oscilloscopes. Experience with motor controllers, PID setup, and instrumentation calibration. Has basic soldering skills and capable of hand and power tool use. This position requires the candidate to work in or around controlled areas for cryogenic, pressure systems, and electrical hazards. The candidate must possess good verbal communication

skills and be capable of completing assigned tasks independently as well as working with other team members.

Experienced with Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office Tools.

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:

BS degree in computer science, engineering or related field with at least 8 years of applicable experience; or master’s degree with at least 6 years of applicable experience. A working knowledge of multithreaded and network programming. Experience with basic communication protocols UDP/IP, TCP/IP, Modbus/IP, as well as high-level protocols. Demonstrated knowledge of computer, networking, and distributed control system architecture. Proficient with AutoCAD to produce schematics and enclosure layout drawings. The ability to translate system performance and operational specifications into software design requirements and test

specifications. Experience at a fusion research facility or other large-scale experimental physics project or scientific user facility is preferred.

Essential Job Functions: experience in instrumentation and control system hardware and data acquisition systems to make significant contributions to domestic and international projects involving fusion research. The Blanket and Fuel Cycle group carries out experiment-based research and development work in support of ongoing science and technology research for the U.S. DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Program in the Office of Science.
