Talascend is currently seeking a Fuel Handling System Design Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Bellevue, Washington.
Overview
The Fuel Handling System Design Engineer will focus on the design of primarily mechanical fuel handling and process systems for advanced nuclear reactor projects. The role involves designing, analyzing, and integrating various mechanical systems related to nuclear fuel handling, ensuring compliance with industry standards and project requirements.
Responsibilities
Design nuclear fuel handling systems and sub-systems from requirements through final design review
Develop analyses such as thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, heat transfer, and others, integrating results into plant design delivery
Provide design direction related to thermal and fluid design requirements
Identify and ensure the application of correct design codes, including ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, etc.
Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process system designs
Support planning efforts and maintain schedule adherence for design activities within overall plant design delivery
Create and manage drawing packages, including Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), 3D models, and interface drawings
Collaborate with design disciplines to develop plant design information and specify system design and performance criteria
Provide technical oversight of supplier projects, ensuring timely delivery and quality of data and deliverables
Establish and maintain system requirements and specifications, including engineering design documents
Propose and initiate testing programs for plant system qualification and oversee test execution and evaluation
Generate design packages for systems, sub-systems, and equipment, coordinating calculations, reports, drawings, and specifications
Develop and review technical design documents such as System Design Descriptions and Interface Control Documents
Support licensing activities related to Safety Analysis Reports and participate in design reviews
Qualifications
B.S. in Mechanical or related discipline from an accredited university
5+ years of direct experience with proven mechanical systems skills
Experience in the design of complex mechanical systems, structures, and equipment, particularly nuclear fuel handling systems
Experience performing 3D modeling and creating design drawings
Experience in high temperature and multi-discipline integration is highly desirable
Thermal/CFD experience is highly desired
Previous experience with nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel handling process systems, or similar high-performance system or equipment design is required
Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
Attention to detail and a commitment to technical excellence
Self-starter with the ability to coordinate and lead a design team with minimal direction
Ability to handle projects with many objectives and resolve conflicts between design constraints
Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001
Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of this position through relevant experience, training, or education
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on high-temperature systems and multi-disciplinary integration
