Talascend is currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a remote, contract opportunity with our client.
Overview
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing reactor core components, structures, and related systems for next-generation nuclear reactors. They will work within a collaborative team environment to develop innovative design solutions that meet industry standards and project requirements.
Responsibilities
Coordinate and utilize inputs from engineering and project teams to produce design solutions, including drawings, models, and specifications.
Plan and manage design activities to ensure timely completion according to project schedules.
Develop tests to validate functional and performance requirements of designs.
Perform scoping analysis and trade studies for various design options.
Interface with cross-functional teams for design and analysis activities.
Conduct engineering reviews of team members' products and provide guidance.
Mentor and direct engineers and subcontractors involved in the project.
Support continuous learning and promote best practices within the nuclear industry.
Qualifications
B.S. degree in Mechanical engineering or equivalent (preferred)
Minimum of five years of equipment/component design experience (relevant M.S. and Doctorate degrees may credit up to two or four years respectively)
Experience with 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks
Experience with design of experiments focused on product testing
Experience in finite element stress analysis, mechanical analysis, and first principles calculations
Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
Excellent writing and communication skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with creative thinking ability
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks concurrently
High attention to detail and integrity
Preferred Qualifications
Experience or familiarity with ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code Section III Division 5
Design experience in the nuclear industry, particularly with core assemblies
Knowledge of neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and structural analysis
Experience with finite element analysis using ANSYS and first principles calculations
Experience in developing nuclear product test campaigns and writing test requirements documents
Manufacturing experience, especially in first article production
Experience evaluating vendors, suppliers, and conducting technical reviews
Knowledge of nuclear industry regulations, DOE, and NRC standards
