Electrical Engineer
Work Location: Berkeley, CA (onsite)
Rate: Up to $80.00/hour (non-exempt)
Hours: 40
The required qualifications are as follows:
Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field and a minimum of two years of related engineering experience; or Master's degree and a minimum of one year of related experience; or equivalent education and experience.
• Experience with electrical, electronics, and facility system design and implementation.
• Experience developing and interpreting electrical engineering drawings and documentation, including schematics, layouts, wiring diagrams, cable routing plans, and bills of materials.
• Working knowledge of NEC requirements applicable to AC distribution and electrical equipment installation.
• Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, 3D CAD software such as Revit or comparable tools, and E-CAD tools for schematic capture and electrical layout.
• Ability to work on projects of diverse scope, manage multiple assignments, and meet project deadlines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to coordinate and interact effectively with multiple engineering and technical disciplines.
• Ability to perform required field activities associated with the assignment and demonstrated commitment to safe work execution.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Five or more years of related electrical engineering experience, consistent with the senior Electrical Engineer level.
• Demonstrated experience independently leading electrical engineering design and implementation for complex systems.
• Advanced knowledge of NEC requirements and applicable electrical safety requirements, including NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E.
• Experience with Revit, BIM, or multidisciplinary 3D design coordination, and with SKM and/or ETAP for electrical analysis.
• Experience in a research laboratory, national laboratory, particle accelerator, or comparably complex technical environment, including electrical equipment and systems used in particle accelerators.
• Experience working in a DOE environment or on DOE O 413.3B scientific projects.
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, particularly with experience in power electronics or power supplies.
• EIT certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Position Details:
This role supports the design, planning, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of electrical and cable plant systems, including AC distribution, electrical equipment installation, cable distribution and routing, cable tray and raceway systems, grounding, and related engineering documentation. The Electrical Engineer will coordinate with subsystem leads, engineers, technical staff, contractors and subcontractors, operations personnel, and other project stakeholders to ensure electrical and cabling requirements are developed, documented, integrated, and implemented in accordance with applicable codes and requirements.
Responsibilities:
Electrical Engineering and Design
• Support the design and engineering of AC distribution, electrical equipment, cable distribution, cable routing, cable tray/raceway, grounding, and related electrical infrastructure.
• Develop and maintain electrical engineering documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, rack layouts, cable routing plans, equipment layouts, parts lists, and bills of materials.
• Apply applicable NEC requirements and established engineering practices; use CAD, 3D CAD, and BIM tools to develop and maintain designs.
• Participate in electrical design reviews and multidisciplinary technical reviews, and coordinate electrical and cabling interfaces with subsystem leads and other engineering disciplines.
Installation, Integration, and Field Support
• Support electrical and cable plant installation planning, and evaluate field conditions affecting electrical design and installation.
• Review cable routing, cable tray/raceway, equipment installation, and electrical infrastructure against applicable designs and requirements.
• Support contractor and subcontractor electrical design and installation activities, respond to field questions, and support verification of compliance with approved designs.
• Resolve electrical design, installation, and technical interface issues, and support electrical system integration, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
Engineering Documentation and Technical Coordination
• Prepare, review, and maintain engineering and project documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, cable routing plans, equipment layouts, specifications, and interface documents.
• Maintain design-review documentation, field markups, as-built documentation, and configuration-controlled engineering records.
• Coordinate with subsystem leads, engineers, designers, technicians, contractors and subcontractors, and operations personnel to resolve issues affecting electrical design, installation, integration, and commissioning.
Safety and Engineering Compliance
• Apply applicable NEC requirements and engineering practices to electrical distribution, equipment installation, grounding, and cabling.
• Consider reliability, maintainability, safety, and applicable codes and standards in the selection and evaluation of electrical components and equipment.
• Support safe execution of electrical design, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning activities, and maintain required safety and technical training.
Physical Requirements: Must be capable of climbing, walking, kneeling, bending, and lifting as part of daily job responsibilities. Ability to lift a minimum of 35 - 60 lbs.
