Mechanical Design Engineer – Advanced Reactor

Idaho National Laboratory
Assignment: 6 Months
Work Arrangement: Remote with travel to MFC as required
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship Required
Access: Building Access Only (BAO)

Position Overview

The Mechanical Design Engineer will provide applied mechanical engineering support for a novel advanced reactor design project, applying engineering principles to mechanical problems involving heat, gas, air, fluids, and solid materials required to design nuclear reactors and systems that operate safely, reliably, efficiently, and predictably.

The engineer must be proficient in designing systems in accordance with applicable national consensus codes and standards, including the ASME B31 series and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC).

Key Responsibilities

Work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers supporting novel advanced reactor design.
Perform mechanical system design and evaluation.
Support project completion and implementation.
Perform reactor vessel design using ASME BPVC, including high-temperature applications accounting for creep and fatigue.
Design high-temperature gaskets, sealing systems, and bolting.
Document designs of electromechanical devices through controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, and design descriptions.
Support design of equipment such as control rod/drum drive mechanisms.
Decompose project objectives into defined and controlled design requirements using a systems engineering approach.
Apply digital engineering tools for tracking requirements and design parameters.
Develop and validate designs against defined requirements.
Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements.
Ensure fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement activities are performed in accordance with the design.
Ensure designs comply with technical baseline requirements and applicable codes and regulations.
Develop and maintain configuration management of assigned systems and the technical baseline.
Work with designers, customers, and analysts to develop experiment requirements and perform conceptual and final designs.
Follow fabrication and inspection activities and support experiment assembly, installation, and testing.
Support development of integrated analyses to ensure facility safety bases are met.
Support design and fabrication activities leading to reactor operations and experimentation.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following:

BS in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field + minimum 8 years of relevant experience, OR
MS in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field + minimum 6 years of relevant experience.

The qualifying degree must be from an ABET-accredited program.

Candidates must also:

Be a U.S. Citizen.
Have relevant mechanical engineering/design experience.
Be available to travel to MFC as required.
