Applied Mechanics Engineer – Advanced Nuclear Reactor
Work Arrangement: Remote with travel to MFC as required
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship Required
Position Overview
The Applied Mechanics Engineer will apply engineering principles to the analysis, modeling, and simulation of structural and mechanical systems supporting a novel advanced nuclear reactor project.
The position will perform linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses involving stress, force, vibration, and material plasticity and compare results against applicable codes, standards, and orders. The engineer will also perform dynamic seismic analysis of structures, systems, and components, including soil-structure interaction analysis.
Key Responsibilities
Work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers supporting advanced reactor design.
Perform thermomechanical analysis of reactor internals, including high-temperature graphite and other exotic materials.
Perform analysis utilizing ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) requirements.
Perform seismic evaluations utilizing ASCE 7.
Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, or electrical systems to support and verify designs.
Support design teams with alternatives analysis, equipment selection and sizing, vendor equipment evaluations, specifications, drawings, analyses, calculations, and engineering design files.
Perform structural mechanics analyses of structures, systems, and components under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and accident conditions.
Support Safety Analysis through simulation of postulated accidents and their structural/mechanical consequences.
Develop and document controlled models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions, and engineering analyses.
Apply ASME, ASCE, and other mechanical and structural codes and their relationship to DOE requirements for safety-class systems.
Perform calculations and develop models investigating nonlinear behavior of nuclear facilities and systems subjected to seismic ground motion.
Perform/support advanced nonlinear site-response analysis.
Provide technical leadership, peer review, checking, and consultation to other engineers.
Serve as a primary author of professional technical reports and presentations.
Serve as an advisor to management within areas of technical expertise and potentially act as a spokesperson to customers.
Required Education & Experience
Candidates must meet one of the following:
BS in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field + minimum 8 years of relevant experience, OR
MS in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field + minimum 6 years of relevant experience.
The qualifying degree must be from an ABET-accredited program.
Candidates must also be U.S. Citizens.

Nuclear systems and advanced reactors
Structural/mechanical modeling and simulation
Nuclear facility structural mechanics
DOE requirements for safety-class systems
Knowledge of ASME BPVC Section III Division 5 is specifically identified, with Section III Division 5 experience preferred in the analysis responsibilities.
