Principal Engineer – I&C Design Engineer
Location: Savannah River Site – Aiken, SC
Official Title: Principal Engineer
Working Title: I&C Design Engineer
Schedule: Full-Time | 40 Hours per Week
Security: DOE Q Clearance - ability to obtain and maintain

Position Overview
EGS is seeking an experienced Principal Engineer – I&C Design Engineer to provide design engineering staff augmentation support at the Savannah River Site.

The position will provide engineering expertise in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) design, including engineering analysis, field walkdowns, design development, and generation of design output documents. The engineer will support complex technical activities while applying advanced engineering practices and providing technical leadership and guidance.

The successful candidate must have significant recent I&C design experience within the nuclear or process chemical industry, including experience with process control instrumentation, PLCs, distributed control systems, and MicroStation 2D CADD.

Key Responsibilities
I&C Design Engineering
Provide design engineering staff augmentation support.
Perform engineering analysis and design development.
Conduct field walkdowns supporting engineering work.
Develop and generate design output documentation, including:
Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
Control Logics
Loop Diagrams
Instrument Indices
Setpoint Lists
Instrument Specifications
Control Valve Specifications
DCS Designs
PLC Designs
Instrument Location and Installation Designs
Panel Layouts
Vendor Document Reviews
Provide engineering services using applicable processes and procedures.
Technical Engineering & Leadership
Define the scope of technical programs and develop effective solutions to unique or controversial technical challenges.
Apply technical experience and expertise to resolve complex problems.
Incorporate advanced technical practices, complicated technical requirements, new or special materials or processes, and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex technical problems.
Provide direction on programs involving new approaches to problems and new applications of existing engineering or scientific principles.
Provide guidance and assistance to less-senior professionals.
Evaluate program results and prepare reports and recommendations.
Identify and recommend improvements when established technologies or methodologies are inadequate.
Maintain awareness of advancements in applicable technology.
Planning & Execution
Prepare plans that include schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements for technical tasks identified by management.
Develop schedules and monitor progress.
Monitor budget expenditures.
Review the quality of work performed.
Communicate results and objectives verbally and in written form to customers, colleagues, and management.
Occasionally prepare reports for external publication.


Job Requirements
Minimum Security Clearance:

Required Education & Experience
Candidates must meet one of the following education and experience combinations:

Ph.D. in an applicable science or engineering discipline with 5+ years of experience; OR
Master's degree with 8+ years of experience; OR
Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of experience.
The position additionally requires a BS degree in one of the following disciplines, or current registration as a Professional Engineer in one of these disciplines:

Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Nuclear Engineering
I&C Engineering
Required I&C Experience
Candidates must demonstrate:

10 years of direct I&C design experience within the last 15 years in the nuclear or process chemical industry.
Design experience with process control instrumentation.
Design experience with PLCs.
Design experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
Proficiency using MicroStation 2D Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software.
Field Requirements
The selected candidate must be able to perform weekly field walkdowns of the job site for the engineering work being performed.

Walkdowns may include:

Construction sites with uneven surfaces and active work in progress.
Walking distances exceeding one-half mile.
Climbing ladders to access remote areas.
Dressing out in protective clothing.
