Nuclear Planner Mechanical and Electrical
Position Summary
The Nuclear Planner develops detailed work packages for mechanical and electrical maintenance, modifications, construction, and outage activities at commercial nuclear facilities. This position coordinates with engineering, operations, maintenance, construction, procurement, radiation protection, and scheduling to ensure work is safely and efficiently planned in accordance with plant procedures and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Develop complete mechanical and electrical work packages for online maintenance, refueling outages, forced outages, and capital projects.
Perform field walkdowns to confirm system conditions, equipment locations, access requirements, interferences, and work scope.
Define work steps, craft requirements, labor hours, materials, tools, equipment, permits, hold points, and acceptance criteria.
Review drawings, specifications, vendor manuals, procedures, design-change packages, and equipment history.
Plan mechanical work involving piping, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, HVAC systems, rotating equipment, and structural supports.
Plan electrical work involving power distribution, switchgear, breakers, transformers, motors, motor control centers, cable installations, terminations, and testing.
Identify isolation, clearance, lockout/tagout, confined-space, hot-work, scaffolding, rigging, and temporary-power requirements.
Coordinate parts, materials, rental equipment, and vendor support to ensure work readiness.
Incorporate quality-control inspections, testing requirements, engineering hold points, and post-maintenance testing into work packages.
Coordinate with Radiation Protection to incorporate ALARA controls, dose estimates, shielding, protective clothing, and radiological requirements.
Identify industrial and nuclear safety hazards and incorporate appropriate controls and Human Performance tools.
Develop job-hour estimates and resource requirements for mechanical and electrical crafts.
Support schedule development by establishing work durations, activity logic, prerequisites, and sequencing.
Participate in planning meetings, constructability reviews, schedule reviews, work-package reviews, and pre-job briefings.
Revise work packages based on field conditions, engineering changes, lessons learned, and post-job feedback.
Maintain accurate planning documentation in the stations work-management system.
Support outage execution by resolving planning issues and providing field assistance when required.
Required Qualifications
Experience planning mechanical or electrical maintenance, construction, modification, or outage work in a commercial nuclear facility or similarly regulated industrial environment.
Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, equipment, maintenance practices, and construction methods.
Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, specifications, and technical manuals.
Knowledge of work-package development, job-hour estimating, material planning, work sequencing, and resource requirements.
Understanding of lockout/tagout, clearances, work permits, industrial safety, quality control, and post-maintenance testing.
Strong written communication, organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to perform detailed field walkdowns and work effectively with engineering, operations, maintenance, construction, and craft personnel.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance or work-management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelors or associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management, or a related technical field.
Journeyman-level mechanical or electrical trade experience.
Previous commercial nuclear power plant planning or outage experience.
Working knowledge of Primavera P6 and project scheduling principles.
Familiarity with ALARA, nuclear safety culture, Human Performance, quality assurance, corrective action, and configuration-control programs.
Experience with plant modifications, system upgrades, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and major component replacements.
Working Conditions
This position may require travel, field walkdowns, climbing ladders, entering confined or radiologically controlled areas, and working near operating equipment. Extended hours, rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and temporary outage assignments may be required. Candidates must satisfy applicable nuclear site-access, security, training, background-screening, and fitness-for-duty requirements.
