An Estimator IV (Principal Estimator) is responsible for leading a team to develop EPC project cost estimates and present them to senior management. This will require a thorough knowledge of all aspects of the work being performed and the ability to develop estimates using the appropriate methods to suit the clients requirements. The estimate will need to be organized to meet the companies and clients expected structure.
Follow the standard of ethics and integrity that are laid down in company policy and ensure that company information and information entrusted to us by our clients is kept with the appropriate level of confidentiality.
Able to takeoff elements of the work accurately and estimate them appropriately, must have a strong attention to detail.
Solicit subcontract and vendor pricing. Maintain and use budget pricing where appropriate. Perform detailed reviews with Vendors to ensure their pricing is comprehensive.
Discuss the development of deliverables with the engineering disciplines to achieve the accuracy required.
Develop EPC estimates based on partial information, including generating pipe takeoffs from Plot plans and P&ID.
Use appropriately selected data from other projects.
Monitor the scope of the project to ensure that all trades have been coordinated and a complete project is being offered.
Prepare bridging documents demonstrating an understanding of how estimated costs have changed from previous estimates.
Participate in constructability reviews and cost saving enhancement discussions.
Organize the estimate and supporting documentation in a manner required to meet the needs of the project. Facilitate understanding of the estimate by team members. Establish the baseline to allow future trending of the cost.
Lead the effort to generate an appropriately detailed resource loaded preliminary schedule. Identify critical phases and resources.
Estimate the requirements for craft support labor, staff, equipment and facilities. Select appropriate equipment including cranes.
Develop risk ranging for the project and use that to assign contingency, using a Monte Carlo simulation or other method.
Understand the principals of project cash flow and develop project milestone billing schedules and cash flow diagrams.
Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects and capable of working independently.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
10+ years of appropriate experience or a minimum of 15+ years of experience if no degree.
Minimum of 4 years experience as an estimator or project engineer / manager involved with cost monitoring.
Bachelors degree in Engineering or related field preferred.
Have the ability to quickly visualize the finished product from the drawings and other documents provided.
Have demonstrated leadership abilities to coordinate a team of estimators to develop a large multidisciplinary estimate.
Have solid technical skills, and be familiar with the various classes of estimates and the purpose that they are intended for. Have a clear understanding of the deliverables needed to achieve them.
Be familiar with the following estimating methods and when their use is appropriate. Capacity factors, Lang & Guthrie factors, cost per square foot, modeling software (Aspen Capital Cost Estimator), forced and semi detailed takeoffs, detailed quantity takeoffs.
Understand the principals of and perform Monte Carlo Risk Simulations for both cost and schedule.
Understand the EPC design process and the Funding estimate process, write estimate plans, and estimate basis documents.
Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Make clear and concise presentations to senior management.
Have a good understanding of the operating process at the facilities being estimated such as refineries, terminals, power plants, mining or other heavy industrial facilities.
Have a good understanding of current market conditions, availability of labor and other risks that may affect work.
Be a self-motivated enthusiastic team player willing to work with others and adopt new ideas and methods.
Good computer skills including an operating knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Familiarity with Sage estimating, project scheduling software (MS Project or Primavera) and databases will be an advantage.
This position may require occasional travel and extended workdays.
