Key Project Requirements:
• 5+ years control room experience required. Wood-fired steam turbine highly desired.
• Proficient with Microsoft tools, CMMS and use of trending/performance data to support operating decisions
• Working knowledge of DCS/I&C and plant electrical systems (boiler/turbine controls, BMS/combustion controls, CEMS, MV/LV distribution.)
• Demonstrated shift leadership and strong communication skills, able to direct on-shift personnel and coordinate with maintenance, vendors and management.
Job Summary:
NAES is seeking an experienced Control Room Operator to lead and coordinate on-shift operations at a power generation facility in California. This role is responsible for the safe and efficient production of steam and electricity, serving as the senior individual on shift with authority to take necessary action to protect personnel, the environment, and plant equipment. The Control Room Operator oversees plant operations including startup, shutdown, monitoring, troubleshooting, and coordination of on-site activities while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Lead and oversee all on-shift plant operations, including startup, shutdown, monitoring, switching and tagging, inspections, and routine testing.
• Ensure all safety, environmental, and operating procedures are followed and initiate corrective actions as needed.
• Coordinate, monitor, and control plant equipment and personnel to ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Support the Operations Supervisor with daily operations planning, scheduling, and administrative reporting.
• Review, write, and revise operating and related procedures as required.
• Assist with housekeeping standards and ensure plant cleanliness and organization are maintained.
• Support preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities in coordination with maintenance teams.
• Provide technical and operational feedback regarding shift performance and plant conditions.
• Assist in training, orientation, and development of O&M Technicians to ensure high-quality work performance.
Job Requirements:
• Strong knowledge of power plant safety practices, including high-energy systems, chemical handling, rotating equipment, confined spaces, and fire protection.
• Solid understanding of core technical fundamentals, including AC/DC electrical theory, basic physics and math, chemistry, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and water treatment processes.
• Hands-on experience in multiple technical disciplines, such as mechanical maintenance, rotating equipment, alignment, fabrication, pipefitting, rigging, welding, machining, vibration analysis, and electrical troubleshooting (high- and low-voltage systems).
• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation including P&IDs, single-line diagrams, schematics, and mechanical/electrical drawings.
• Experience with maintenance management systems (CMMS or similar) and use of test and analytical equipment.
• Working, hands-on knowledge of power plant instrumentation and control systems, including burner management, combustion control, boiler controls, turbine controls, machine condition monitoring, and CEMS.
• Working, hands-on knowledge of power plant electrical systems, including medium- and low-voltage switchgear, motors, MCCs, transformers, generators, batteries, inverters, chargers, and excitation systems.
Education / Experience:
• High school diploma or GED required
• 5+ years control room experience required.
• Wood-fired steam turbine experience highly desired.
• Hands-on experience with boilers/HRSGs, and water treatment systems strongly preferred.
Compensation:
The hourly rate for this position generally ranges between $60-$65.
