Shift Operations Supervisor / Shift Manager (Power Plant Operations)
-10 years of experience as an Operations Supervisor in a coal plant
Key Responsibilities
Plan and direct plant operations for all units, ensuring shift activities comply with company policies/programs/procedures, plant Technical Specifications, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Ensure safe and reliable operation of plant units, maintaining an uncompromising focus on the safety and welfare of plant staff and the general public.
Manage and prioritize day-to-day Shift Operations activities; provide functional supervision and set priorities for other groups as needed to meet shift operating objectives.
Serve as Site Emergency Director during emergency plan activation (until properly relieved), ensuring timely notifications to emergency response personnel and federal/state/local authorities as required; provide protective action recommendations when appropriate; ensure emergency response manning requirements are met.
Act as the senior operations manager in the absence of the Operations Manager; accountable for quality and operational performance; resolve conflicts and adjust priorities to support safe and efficient operations.
Conduct briefings for plant organizations and lead shift turnover activities to ensure continuity of priorities, objectives, and operations.
Oversee training, technical skill development, soft-skill development, and qualification maintenance for direct reports.
Maintain professional control, demeanor, and appearance consistent with safe plant operations and business expectations.
Conduct performance evaluations and handle disciplinary actions and other HR-related activities for assigned operations employees.
Perform additional duties as assigned (e.g., unit manager support, outage support, procedures, training initiatives).
Conduct critical management observations to reinforce safe behaviors and focus attention on sensitive work activities.
Promote a strong teamwork culture and continuous improvement in behaviors through company values and leadership principles.
Maintain strict adherence to Conduct of Operations procedures.
Establish performance directives and lead process improvement efforts, including:
a. Incorporating best work management practices
b. Resolving team conflicts
c. Directing self-assessments of processes
d. Addressing site/fleet barriers
e. Championing human performance tools
f. Actively supporting and using corrective action tools
Successfully complete required training and maintain current safety and regulatory training.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in a technical field OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Experience
5+ years of power plant operations experience
2+ years in a supervisory capacity
Unit operator experience
Must meet required medical clearance (e.g., S4 or equivalent per site requirements)
Completion of entry qualification requirements and “clearance qualified” status (per site program requirements)
Responsible Employee status as defined by site protective tagging / switching procedures
Switchyard training (as required by site)
Ability to work an assigned shift schedule (including nights/weekends/rotations as required)

Proven leadership skills with the ability to direct and develop employees
Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across all organizational levels
Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure and changing priorities
Innovative and future-focused mindset; strong program and personnel management capability
Demonstrated negotiation and critical thinking skills
May be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance based on access requirements and essential job functions
Work Schedule / Conditions
Shift-based schedule; may include nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating coverage depending on plant needs.
Safety- and compliance-critical environment with emergency response responsibilities.
