SHOP MACHINIST
Position Summary
• We are seeking an experienced Shop Machinist with strong industrial machining experience. The ideal candidate will be responsible for setting up and operating manual and/or CNC machine tools to manufacture, repair, and modify precision components used in industrial equipment and machinery.
• The Shop Machinist should have strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, measurements, and machining specifications.
Key Responsibilities
• Set up and operate manual and/or CNC machine tools, including lathes, mills, drill presses, grinders, and related equipment.
• Machine, repair, modify, and fabricate precision components according to drawings and specifications.
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, work orders, and machining instructions.
• Select appropriate tooling, cutting speeds, feeds, and machining methods for various materials.
• Perform turning, milling, drilling, boring, facing, threading, grinding, and other machining operations.
• Measure and inspect finished parts using precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and indicators.
• Perform machine setups, tool changes, adjustments, and offsets as required.
• Identify machining problems and make appropriate adjustments to maintain quality and accuracy.
• Maintain proper tolerances and dimensional specifications.
• Perform routine maintenance and housekeeping on machines and work areas.
• Follow all company safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized shop environment.
• Work closely with Millwrights, Welders, Mechanics, Engineers, and other craft personnel when repairing or fabricating components.
Required Qualifications
• Minimum 3–5 years of industrial or shop machining experience preferred.
• Strong experience operating manual machine tools.
• Experience with engine lathes and milling machines preferred.
• CNC experience is a plus.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and blueprints.
• Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, tolerances, and measurements.
• Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and bore gauges.
• Ability to perform accurate setups and machining with minimal supervision.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work safely around machine tools and industrial equipment.
• Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, and varying schedules as project requirements dictate.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience machining components for oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, refining, manufacturing, or heavy industrial equipment.
• Experience working with large or heavy components.
• Experience machining carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, Inconel, and other industrial materials.
• CNC programming or editing experience.
• Experience with tight-tolerance machining.
• Previous experience repairing or rebuilding industrial equipment.
• Technical school, apprenticeship, or machining certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand for extended periods.
• Ability to bend, kneel, climb, reach, and work around industrial machinery.
• Ability to lift and move materials and components as required.
• Ability to safely operate machine tools and material-handling equipment.
• Must be able to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe footwear, gloves, and other site-required equipment.
