360X Staffing is hiring for Structural Welders in Erie, PA.
Pay: $24/hr + $130 daily per diem for days worked
Job Description:
The Structural Welder supports vessel repair operations during the winter layup season. This role is responsible for performing high-quality structural welds on steel components, including hull plating, frames, bulkheads, and foundations. Work involves welding single-bevel joints with backing strips on ½” plate using .052” Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) wire with 100% CO2 shielding gas. Welders must be proficient in 3G and 4G positions and capable of meeting shipyard, class society, and customer quality standards.
Responsibilities:
Welding & Fabrication
Perform FCAW welding using .052” flux-cored wire with 100% CO2 gas shielding.
Weld single-bevel joints with backing strips on ½” plate with a 3/16” root opening.
Execute structural welds in 3G (vertical) and 4G (overhead) positions.
Repair and replace structural steel components on commercial vessels during winter layup.
Fit, prep, grind, and clean joints prior to welding to ensure proper penetration and fusion.
Maintain weld parameters consistent with WPS requirements and shipyard procedures.
Inspection & Quality
Perform visual inspections of welds to verify compliance with acceptance criteria.
Ensure welds meet structural, ABS/Coast Guard, or customer specifications (as applicable).
Identify defects (porosity, undercut, lack of fusion) and make proper repairs.
Follow all documentation and QC processes required by the shipyard.
Tools & Equipment
Operate welding machines, wire feeders, grinders, oxy-fuel torches, and basic fabrication tools.
Set up and adjust shielding gas flow, voltage, wire speed, and preheat (if required).
Use chain falls, come-alongs, and rigging equipment safely when positioning steel components.
Safety & Work Environment
Follow shipyard safety protocols including hot-work procedures, confined-space rules, and PPE requirements.
Work in cold, icy, and sometimes enclosed environments typical of winter layup repair yards.
Maintain safe housekeeping in all work areas to prevent slips, trips, and hazards.
Qualifications
Required
2+ years experience as a structural welder in a shipyard, industrial, or heavy-steel environment.
Proficiency with FCAW using .052” wire and 100% CO2 shielding gas.
Ability to weld in 3G and 4G positions on heavy plate.
Experience welding single-bevel joints with backing strips.
Ability to read and interpret WPS documents and basic fabrication drawings.
Capable of working in winter conditions and tight vessel spaces.
Preferred
Previous experience in ship repair or winter layup operations.
ABS, AWS D1.1, or NAVSEA welding qualifications (or the ability to test into them).
Ability to fit steel components and assist with structural layout.
Working Days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Hours: 60+/week
