360X Staffing is hiring for Steel Fitters in Erie, PA.
Pay: $24/hr + $130 daily per diem for days worked
Job Description:
The Steel Fitter supports structural steel repairs on commercial vessels during the winter layup season. This role involves layout, fitting, cutting, and preparing steel components for welding and installation. Fitters must demonstrate proficiency in oxy/propylene cutting, basic layout skills, and the ability to read and interpret measurements accurately. As part of the hiring and onboarding process, all candidates are evaluated on their cutting abilities and layout competency.
Responsibilities:
Structural Fitting & Assembly
Fit and position structural components such as brackets, frames, stiffeners, and replacement plating.
Prep and align steel to meet dimensional tolerances prior to welding.
Use wedges, dogs, come-alongs, and chain falls to pull components into position.
Work closely with welders to ensure proper fit, root opening, and bevel preparation.
Cutting & Material Preparation
Use oxy/propylene cutting equipment to cut, bevel, shape, or remove steel components during repairs.
Perform wash cuts to remove fillets or damaged welds without compromising parent metal.
Clean, grind, and prep steel surfaces for welding.
Layout & Blueprint Interpretation
Perform accurate measurements, layouts, and markings based on shipyard drawings or supervisor instruction.
Interpret simple sketches, fabrication notes, and repair instructions.
Communicate dimensional discrepancies or material issues promptly.
Ship Repair Operations
Assist with removing and installing structural inserts, bulkheads, internal framing, and hull repairs.
Work in confined spaces, tanks, bilges, or vessel interiors as needed for repair access.
Support emergency or time-critical repair operations during winter schedules.
Safety & Work Environment
Follow all shipyard safety protocols including hot-work procedures, confined-space requirements, and PPE rules.
Properly handle oxy/propylene cylinders, hoses, and regulators.
Maintain clean work areas and support safe material handling practices.
Work in cold, wet, windy, or icy winter conditions typical of layup repair yards.
Qualifications
Required
2+ years experience as a steel fitter, shipfitter, or structural fitter in a shipyard or heavy-steel environment.
Demonstrated ability to safely set up and operate an oxy/propylene cutting torch.
Proficiency performing square, bevel, and wash cuts.
Ability to perform accurate layout work using tape measures, squares, levels, and chalk/soapstone.
Strong understanding of root openings, bevel angles, alignment, and weld preparation.
Ability to work in confined spaces and winter weather conditions.
Preferred
Experience with vessel repair, drydock operations, or winter layup maintenance.
Familiarity with ABS or shipyard quality standards.
Ability to tack weld (optional but beneficial).
Working Days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Hours: 50+/week
