Job Opportunity: First Class Shipfitter (Commercial/Naval)
Are you a highly skilled Shipfitter with a track record of excellence in naval or commercial shipbuilding? We are seeking experienced professionals to join our team in Newport News. This is a physically demanding, high-stakes role requiring precision, technical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to safety.

Role Overview
As a First Class Shipfitter, you will be responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and installation of complex structural components. You will work with advanced blueprints and specialized equipment to ensure the structural integrity of elite naval vessels.
Primary Responsibilities
• Fabrication & Assembly: Lay out piece parts, assemble structural components, and install hull inserts, penetrations, and complex foundations.
• Structural Work: Erect, set, and make up complex-shaped shell plates, decks, bulkheads, and longitudinals.
• Technical Execution: Use work packages, molded lines, and ship reference lines to plan and execute tasks.
• Tool Operation: Utilize oxygen/propane torches for burning and heating, vibratory tools (grinders/needle guns), and air carbon arc gouging equipment.
• Welding: Perform multi-pass tack welding (SMAW) in vertical and overhead positions.

Required Qualifications & Skills
• Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of commercial or naval experience as a First Class Shipfitter.
• Technical Literacy: Ability to comprehend complex structural drawings, blueprints, and sketches, including weld symbols and datum lines.
• Mathematical Proficiency: Advanced understanding of fractional dimensions and the use of precision measuring tools (rulers).
• Physical Capability: Ability to perform demanding labor in varying temperature and humidity extremes.
Mandatory Testing
All candidates must pass the following practical tests at the NNS Welding School without prior training:
1. Multi-Pass Tack Welder Qualification (SMAW): Vertical Up (3F) and Overhead (4F) positions.
2. Visual Inspection of Weld Level I: (6-hour assessment).
