Pay: $27/hr plus $100 per diem for days worked

Combo Structural Welder/Fitter – Shipyard Barge Repair

Job Summary
A busy marine repair shipyard in Wickliffe, KY is hiring experienced Combo Structural Welder/Fitters for barge repair and structural fabrication work. This position requires individuals who can both fit and weld structural steel components used in barge and vessel repair operations. Candidates must be skilled in fitting, burning, weld washing with an oxy-acetylene cutting torch, and SMAW welding using 3/16" 6010 electrodes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Read and interpret blueprints, repair drawings, and marine structural specifications
Lay out, fit, align, and assemble structural steel components for barge repair
Repair or replace hull plating, decks, bulkheads, frames, stiffeners, and structural members
Perform SMAW welding using 3/16" 6010 stick electrodes in multiple positions
Complete root passes, fill passes, and structural repair welds to shipyard quality standards
Wash welds and remove defective weld metal using an oxy-acetylene cutting torch
Burn, bevel, and prepare steel materials for fitting and welding operations
Tack weld fitted components while maintaining proper dimensions and alignment
Use grinders, torches, magnetic drills, measuring tools, and fabrication equipment
Verify fit-up accuracy, weld preparation, and final assembly tolerances
Assist with rigging, material handling, and structural alignment during repair operations
Maintain compliance with all shipyard safety procedures and hot work requirements
Work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and outdoor marine environments
Qualifications
Previous experience as a combo welder/fitter in a shipyard, barge repair facility, or heavy industrial environment required
Must be proficient welding with 3/16" 6010 stick electrodes
Must be able to wash welds using an oxy-acetylene cutting torch
Strong structural fitting and fabrication experience required
Ability to read blueprints, tape measures, and marine repair drawings
Knowledge of SMAW welding procedures, fit-up tolerances, and structural steel repair
Ability to pass welding and fitting tests if required
Preferred Skills
Experience repairing hopper barges and inland marine vessels
FCAW welding experience preferred
Familiarity with carbon arc gouging and torch washing techniques
Experience operating rigging equipment and overhead cranes
Ability to work independently and maintain production schedules
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 50+ pounds regularly
Ability to climb ladders, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces
Capable of working outdoors in varying weather conditions
Must be able to wear required PPE including welding hood, respirator, gloves, and fall protection

Working Days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Working Hours: 50+ hours per week
