We are seeking an experienced Certified Marine Painter / Blaster to join our shipyard team supporting the construction, maintenance, and repair of U.S. Navy and commercial vessels. The ideal candidate will have experience performing abrasive blasting, surface preparation, and application of marine and military-grade coating systems in accordance with NAVSEA, SSPC, NACE, and manufacturer specifications. This position requires strict adherence to quality, environmental, and safety standards while working in shipboard, industrial, and confined-space environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform abrasive blasting of steel, aluminum, and other substrates to required surface preparation standards.
Prepare surfaces through grinding, power tooling, needle gunning, sanding, and solvent cleaning.
Apply marine coating systems including primers, epoxies, zinc-rich coatings, urethanes, and specialty military coatings using conventional, airless, and plural-component spray equipment.
Measure and verify coating thickness using wet film and dry film thickness gauges.
Read and interpret coating specifications, technical data sheets, and work packages.
Conduct environmental monitoring including temperature, humidity, dew point, and surface temperature measurements.
Mask and protect equipment, machinery, and adjacent surfaces prior to coating operations.
Perform touch-up, maintenance, and preservation work aboard vessels and within shipyard facilities.
Complete required quality control and production documentation.
Maintain blasting and painting equipment in safe operating condition.
Work safely in confined spaces, tanks, voids, machinery spaces, and elevated work areas.
Follow all OSHA, NAVSEA, environmental, and shipyard safety requirements.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of marine, industrial, or shipyard painting and blasting experience.
Current or previous certification in marine coatings, SSPC, NACE/AMPP, NAVSEA, or equivalent coating standards preferred.
Experience operating abrasive blasting equipment and airless spray systems.
Ability to read and interpret coating specifications and work instructions.
Knowledge of surface preparation standards including SSPC-SP and NAVSEA requirements.
Experience using coating inspection equipment such as DFT gauges, psychrometers, and surface profile gauges.
Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including confined spaces and heights.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive physical tasks.
Reliable transportation and ability to work overtime as required.
Preferred Qualifications
C-7 Abrasive Blaster Certification.
C-12 Spray Applicator Certification.
AMPP (formerly SSPC/NACE) Coatings Application Specialist certification.
Confined Space Entry certification.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
TWIC Card (preferred).
Experience working on U.S. Navy vessels, military contracts, or government shipbuilding projects.
